Room temperature static lattice dielectric constant of lead telluride by a microwave cavity-perturbation technique

Abstract:We have measured the room-temperature static lattice dielectric constant of PbTe using a cavity-perturbation technique. The result, ?s = 800 ± 220, implies a transverse optic phonon frequency ωTO = 23 ± 43 cm-1 in agreement with values extrapolated from low-temperature magnetoplasma measurements but in disagreement with the commonly-quoted neutron-diffraction result of Cochran et al., ωTO = 31.7 ± 1.3 cm-1.
