Abstract: | Uric acid, 3-ribosyluric acid, 1-methyluric acid, 1,3,7-trimethyluric acid, 2,8-dihydroxyadenine, and 2-imidazolone reacted with galvinoxyl, a stable free radical, to form galvinol. The reaction was followed by the decrease in absorbance at 550 nm of an ethanolic solution of galvinoxyl. Related compounds such as inosine, xanthosine, 2-hydroxybenzimidazole, lumichrome, and lumazine did not react with galvinoxyl. The data reported support the proposal that urates are important antioxidants and free-radical scavengers. |
