Low loss dielectric optical waveguide bends

The pure bend loss of a curved dielectric optical waveguide can be reduced effectively with only a slight change in the transverse field distribution by replacing the cladding material outside the caustic by another material with a smaller refractive index. This is demonstrated by microwave model experiments.
