Abstract: | The infrared absorption band frequencies and absolute integral intensities for the carbonyl C=O and vinyl C=C group stretching vibrations in vinyl acetate, vinyl benzoate, and six substituted vinyl benzoates have been measured in inert solvents. The asymmetry of the absorption bands for the C=C vibrations of the vinyl group is attributed to Fermi resonance. A correlation between the frequencies and intensities of the bands studied and the Hammett substituent constants has been found. |
