Abstract:
Abstract A novel method for the synthesis of E-styrylbenzylsulfones from E-sodium styrysulfinates and benzyl chlorides has been described. The cyclopropanation of these compounds with dimethylsulfonium methylide gave E-1-benzylsulfonyl-2-arylcyclopropanes in good yields. The corresponding Z-isomers have been obtained by the cycloaddition of benzylthiocarbenes to styrenes under phase transfer catalysis. Their geometry has been assigned based on IR and 1H NMR spectral data.
