On Gender Uncertainty in Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine

Gender repression in British feministic playwright Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine is not only represented in the female characters’ searching for sexual identity, but also in one of the main character—British boy Edward’s constant pursuit of gender roles, which also bespeaks gender uncertainty in the post-modern era. This essay is focused on the very process of gender pursuit, in analyzing the character’s gender being subverted, de-centered and collaged, as well as built through the matriarchal mythology. After the analysis, the uncertainty of gender occurs to our readers, and will benefit the gender situation in China in terming of imposing tolerance toward different gender roles.
