Abstract: | Biotechnology is one of the leading fields both in research and in industry. Tremendous effort has been made during the last two decades. However, biotechnology is much older than a few decades. Classical biotechnological products and processes are used from mankind over more than 5000 years. This article reflects the historical development of biotechnology — starting from the Egypt breweries over the production of indigo and saltpetre in the middle age to the discoveries of Pasteur, Fleming and Weizmann. |
