Modeling Media with Oriented Structures

Heterogeneity is typically the result of space variability of soil parameters at different scales. Soil anisotropy may be defined as the spatial persistence in some direction only, across coarse-grid elements, of heterogeneous structures with different characteristic lengths in different directions. One can account for the effect of these structures by upscaling soil properties. Analyzing flow in a strongly anisotropic structured soil at different scales evidences how transverse dispersion reduces to a subscale process, leading to mixing within the conductive structures.

A DISCRETE AGE STRUCTURED SI MODEL OF TRACHEAL MITE (Acarapis woodi (RENNIE)) INFESTATION OF HONEY BEES (Apis mellifera L.) AT THE COLONY LEVEL

This paper presents a discrete age structured SI model of tracheal mite (Acarapis woodi (Rennie)) infestation of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) at the colony level. The model describes the elevated honey bee attrition during winter and predicts that winter brood rearing should promote colony survival by decreasing the colony's infestation and increasing the colony's population. The model also predicts that swarming and the artificial removal of part of the colony's forager honey bees should reduce the colony's infestation level.     

Drag on two nonuniformly structured flocs moving along the axis of a cylindrical tube

The boundary effect on the drag on two identical, nonuniformly structured flocs moving along the axis of a cylindrical tube filled with a Newtonian fluid is investigated at a small to medium larger Reynolds number. A two-layer model is adopted to simulate various possible structures of a floc, and the flow field inside is described by Darcy–Brinkman model. The results of numerical simulation reveal that a convective flow is present in the rear region of a floc when Reynolds number is on the order of 40. The presence of the tube wall and/or the porous structure of a floc has the effect of reducing that convective flow. For a fixed level of the volume-average permeability of a floc, the influence of the tube wall on the drag depends upon floc structure; the influence on a nonuniformly structured floc is more significant than that on a uniformly structured floc. The more nonuniform the floc structure, the more appreciable the deviation of the drag coefficient–Reynolds number curve from a Stokes’-law-like relation becomes. The smaller the volume-average permeability of a floc and/or the smaller the separation distance between the two flocs, the greater is the deviation, but the presence of the tube wall has the effect of reducing that deviation.

从理论上论述了单相电容电动机变频调速的可行性，在对称运转的条件下导出了单相电容电动机的电压频率关系式，并给出了相应的电压型逆变器的原理图．应用矢量法分析了该变频器的输出波形，并据此提出了一种新型的脉宽调制（ＰＷＭ）波产生方法．实验结果表明：在指定的频率范围内，单相电机速度可调，运行状态良好．
