Iterated monoidal categories

We develop a notion of an n-fold monoidal category and show that it corresponds in a precise way to the notion of an n-fold loop space. Specifically, the group completion of the nerve of such a category is an n-fold loop space, and free n-fold monoidal categories give rise to a finite simplicial operad of the same homotopy type as the classical little cubes operad used to parametrize the higher H-space structure of an n-fold loop space. We also show directly that this operad has the same homotopy type as the n-th Smith filtration of the Barratt-Eccles operad and the n-th filtration of Berger's complete graph operad. Moreover, this operad contains an equivalent preoperad which gives rise to Milgram's small model for when n=2 and is very closely related to Milgram's model of for n>2.     

Site-specific ϕ- and ψ-torsion angle determination in a uniformly/extensively 13C- and 15N-labeled peptide

A solid-state rotational-echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR method was introduced to identify the ?- and ψ-torsion angle from a ¹H–¹⁵N or ¹H–¹³C′ spin system of alanine-like residues in a selectively, uniformly, or extensively ¹⁵N-/¹³C-labeled peptide. When a C_α(i) or a ¹⁵N peak is site-specifically obtainable in the NMR spectrum of a uniformly ¹⁵N/¹³C-labeled sample system, the ψ- or ?-torsion angle specified by the conformational structure of peptide geometry involving ¹⁵N(i)–¹H_αi–¹⁵N(i + 1) or ¹³C′(i − 1)–¹H^Ni–¹³C′(i) spin system can be identified based on ¹³C_α- or ¹⁵N-detected ¹H_α–¹⁵N or ¹H_N–¹³C REDOR experiment. This method will conveniently be utilized to identify major secondary motifs, such as α-helix, β-sheet, and β-turn, from a uniformly ¹⁵N-/¹³C-labled peptide sample system. When tested on a ¹³C-/¹⁵N-labeled model system of a three amino acid peptide Gly–[U–¹³C, ¹⁵N]Ala–[U–¹³C, ¹⁵N]Leu, the ψ-angle of alanine obtained experimentally, ψ = −40 ± 30°, agreed reasonably well with the X-ray determined angle, ψ = −39°.     

The regioselectivity of the formation of 2-pyrazolylthiazoles and their precursors from the reaction of 2-hydrazinothiazoles with 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-hetaryl-1,3-butanediones

Reaction of 2-hydrazinothiazoles 1 with 1-thienyl- and 1-furyl-1,3-butanediones 2a,b in methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid mainly leads to a mixture of pyrazoles 3 and pyrazolines 4 or pyrazoles 3 and 5 in strong acidic conditions. Isomeric hydrazones 6 and pyrazolines 4 were formed and isolated in these reactions in the absence of hydrochloric acid. It has been shown that the regioselectivity in the reaction of diketones 2 with hydrazine 1 is governed by both the concentration of acid and the nature of substituents in the 1,3-diketones 2. Cyclization of hydrazones 6 is shown to occur under milder conditions than dehydration for pyrazolines 4. The new heterocyclic compounds were prepared and fully characterized by NMR spectra and by X-ray analysis for 3c.     

Synthesis of lariat organochalcogenoethers based on azacalix[3]arenes for the potentiometric detection of [UO2] ions

The syntheses of organochalcogen-supported azacalix[3]arenes are described in a one-pot manner in satisfactory yields. A remarkably selective potentiometric response was accomplished for uranyl ions over a variety of other metal ions, including alkali (Na⁺, K⁺), alkaline-earth (Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺), transition and heavy metal ions (Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ag⁺, Fe³⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺) using an ion-selective electrode based on compound 3 incorporated into a polymeric (PVC) membrane.     

Projective functors for algebraic groups

We investigate the regular subquotient category introduced by Soergel in [W. Soergel, On the relation between intersection cohomology and representation theory in positive characteristic, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 152 (1–3) (2000) 311–335]. A detailed study of projective functors enables one to relate those categories for semi-simple algebraic group G and its subgroup schemata G_rT. As an application we derive some information about the characters of tilting modules for G.     

Approximation theorems for localized szsz–Mirakjan operators

In the present paper, we investigate the convergence and the approximation order of the localized Szsz–Mirakjan operators, and obtain some new results to improve the results due to Omey [Note on operators of Szsz–Mirakjan type, J. Approx. Theory 47 (1986) 246–254].
