一种症候·一类批评·一点启示--析阿切比对康拉德的后殖民批评

康拉德的<黑暗的心>在英语文学史上有很高的地位.来自尼日利亚的阿切比却尖锐地批评了这部小说,其观点引起了巨大争议.透过阿切比的批评策略,可以追问他的批评作为后殖民批评文本的深刻政治意图,并从中得到一些启示.     

从宋代“客星”到中国“天眼”中的脉冲星——“李约瑟难题”试答

 研究和分析了中国古代天文学的辉煌成就与当今中国“天眼”--500 m口径球面射电望远镜（FAST）科学目标--脉冲星的关系。针对宋朝天文学家记录的客星与FAST正在进行的脉冲星观测，详述了宋代客星记录在世界科技史上的贡献；介绍了脉冲星发现历史与基本天体物理特征，以及脉冲星作为FAST科学目标的意义。以客星到脉冲星的千年追寻为线索，探索和尝试回答“李约瑟难题”，认为现代科学是人类文明共同体的长期探索结晶，中国在科学早期的发育过程中播撒了创新火种，而西方在文艺复兴运动中不断完善了科学体系，其中东西方科技的交流与传播得益于蒙古帝国在丝绸之路的远征与开拓。     

Numerical analysis for the mixed Navier–Stokes and Darcy Problem with the Beavers–Joseph interface condition

In this article, we consider the coupled Navier–Stokes and Darcy problem with the Beavers–Joseph interface condition. With suitable restrictions of physical parameters α and ν, we prove the existence and local uniqueness of a weak solution. Then we propose a coupled finite element scheme and a decoupled and linearized scheme based on two‐grid finite element. Under suitable further restrictions, their optimal error estimates are obtained. Finally numerical experiments indicate the validity of the theoretical results as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of the decoupled and linearized two‐grid algorithm. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Early Gravity-Wave Detection Experiments, 1960-1975

I discuss the experiments of Joseph Weber (1919-2000) of the University of Maryland between 1960 and 1973 that were aimed at the detection of gravity waves. He used throughout a quadratic detector to demodulate his antenna signal, which I analyze and compare to a linear detector.The latter was used by all of the other groups that entered the field. Of these, Richard Garwin and I at IBM were one of the first groups to publish, and I discuss in detail our experiments between 1973 and 1975. I then discuss the experiments that were carried out at Bell Labs-Rochester, Glasgow, Munich-Frascati,Moscow, and Tokyo. I compare the results, all of which were negative, with Webers claimed detection of large numbers of gravity-wave events, as many as seven per day. I conclude that these were not in fact gravity waves, but artifacts of his extremely hands-on data-analysis procedures, which I discuss in detail. Finally, I speculate on how this came about.
