An investigation of finite-size scaling for systems with long-range interaction: The spherical model

A method is suggested for the derivation of finite-size corrections in the thermodynamic functions of systems with pair interaction potential decaying at large distancesr asr ^{–d –} , whered is the space dimensionality and>0. It allows for a unified treatment of short-range (=2) and long-range (<2) interaction. The asymptotic analysis is illustrated by the mean spherical model of general geometryL ^d–d× ^d subject to periodic boundary conditions. The Fisher-Privman equation of state is generalized to arbitrary real values ofd, 0d. It is shown that the-expansion may be used to study the breakdown of standard finite-size scaling at the borderline dimensionalities.     

Linear and cyclic N-acetyl-α-aryl-glycines: Synthesis and chemiluminescence studies

Summary A series of N-acetyl--arylglycines (IIa,IIb) was prepared by acid-induced electrophilic -amidoalkylation reactions; compounds of typeIIb were transformed into the corresponding 3-acetylaminobenzo[b]furan-2(3H)ones (III) by treatment with acetic anhydride. It was found that most of these new compounds (lactones as well as open chain derivatives) undergo base induced oxidation in the presence of oxygen with the emission of visible light. Preliminary structure-activity relationships for these novel chemiluminescence class are proposed.

Lineare und cyclische N-Acetyl--aryl-glycine: Synthese und Chemilumineszenz-Untersuchungen

Zusammenfassung Eine Reihe von N-Acetyl--arylglycinen (IIa,IIb) konnte durch sauer induzierte elektrophile -Amidoalkylierung hergestellt werden; die Behandlung von Verbindungen des TypsIIb mit Acetanhydrid führte zu den entsprechenden 3-Acetylaminobenzo[b]furan-2(3H)onen (III). Es zeigt sich, daß die Mehrzahl dieser neuen Verbindungen (sowohl Lactone als auch offenkettige Derivate) bei basisch induzierter Oxidation mit (Luft-)Sauerstoff sichtbares Licht emittieren. Erste Struktur-Aktivitäts-Beziehungen für diese neue chemilumineszenzierende Klasse werden vorgeschlagen.

Quantum transport in a mesoscopic ring: Evidence of an OR gate

We explore the OR gate response in a mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux . The ring is symmetrically attached to two semi-infinite one-dimensional metallic electrodes, and two gate voltages, V_a and V_b, are applied in one arm of the ring; these are treated as the two inputs of the OR gate. All the calculations are based on the tight-binding model and the Green’s function method, which numerically compute the conductance–energy and current–voltage characteristics as functions of the gate voltages, ring-to-electrode coupling strengths and magnetic flux. Our theoretical study shows that, for =₀/2 (₀=ch/e, the elementary flux-quantum), a high output current (1) (in the logical sense) appears if one or both the inputs to the gate are high (1), while if neither input is high (1), a low output current (0) appears. It clearly demonstrates the OR gate behavior, and this aspect may be utilized in designing an electronic logic gate.     

A Korovkin type approximation theorems via $$\mathcal{I}$$ -convergence

Using the concept of -convergence we provide a Korovkin type approximation theorem by means of positive linear operators defined on an appropriate weighted space given with any interval of the real line. We also study rates of convergence by means of the modulus of continuity and the elements of the Lipschitz class.

Comparative analysis of real and \mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}-symmetric Scarf potentials

The Scarf I and Scarf II potentials are discussed within a common mathematical framework, which is then specified to handle the two potentials separately both in the conventional Hermitian and in the -symmetric setting. The physically admissible solutions are identified in each case together with the corresponding energy eigenvalues. Several main differences between the -symmetric Scarf I and II potentials are pointed out. These include the presence and absence of the quasi-parity quantum number, the sign of the pseudo-norm, the mechanism of the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry and the non- orthogonality of otherwise admissible solutions in the Scarf I potential. Similarities and differences with respect to the corresponding Hermitian systems are also pointed out.
