The behavior of differential forms under purely inseparable extensions

Let F be a field of characteristic 2. In this paper we give a complete computation of the kernel of the homomorphism $H_2^{m+1}(F)?H_2^{m+1}(L)$ induced by scalar extension, where $L/F$ is a purely inseparable extension (of any degree), $H_2^{m+1}(F)$ is the cokernel of the Artin–Schreier operator $?:{\mathrm{\Omega }}_F^m?{\mathrm{\Omega }}_F^m/\mathrm{d}{\mathrm{\Omega }}_F^{m?1}$ given by: $x\frac{\mathrm{d}{x}_1}{x_1}\wedge ?\wedge \frac{\mathrm{d}{x}_m}{x_m}?(x^2?x)\frac{\mathrm{d}{x}_1}{x_1}\wedge ?\wedge \frac{\mathrm{d}{x}_m}{x_m}+\mathrm{d}{\mathrm{\Omega }}_F^{m?1}$, where ${\mathrm{\Omega }}_F^m$ is the space of absolute m-differential forms over F and d is the differential operator. Other related results are included.     

Convergence of solutions for the fractional Cahn–Hilliard system

This paper deals with the Cauchy–Dirichlet problem for the fractional Cahn–Hilliard equation. The main results consist of global (in time) existence of weak solutions, characterization of parabolic smoothing effects (implying under proper condition eventual boundedness of trajectories), and convergence of each solution to a (single) equilibrium. In particular, to prove the convergence result, a variant of the so-called ?ojasiewicz–Simon inequality is provided for the fractional Dirichlet Laplacian and (possibly) non-analytic (but $C^1$) nonlinearities.

A nilpotent Roth theorem

Let T and S be invertible measure preserving transformations of a probability measure space (X, ℬ, μ). We prove that if the group generated by T and S is nilpotent, then exists in L ²-norm for any u, v∈L ^∞(X, ℬ, μ). We also show that for A∈ℬ with μ(A)>0 one has . By the way of contrast, we bring examples showing that if measure preserving transformations T, S generate a solvable group, then (i) the above limits do not have to exist; (ii) the double recurrence property fails, that is, for some A∈ℬ, μ(A)>0, one may have μ(A∩T _-n A∩S ^{- n} A)=0 for all n∈ℕ. Finally, we show that when T and S generate a nilpotent group of class ≤c, in L ²(X) for all u, v∈L ^∞(X) if and only if T×S is ergodic on X×X and the group generated by T ^-1 S, T ^-2 S ²,..., T ^-c S ^c acts ergodically on X. Coxeter complexes and graph-associahedra

Given a graph Γ, we construct a simple, convex polytope, dubbed graph-associahedra, whose face poset is based on the connected subgraphs of Γ. This provides a natural generalization of the Stasheff associahedron and the Bott-Taubes cyclohedron. Moreover, we show that for any simplicial Coxeter system, the minimal blow-ups of its associated Coxeter complex has a tiling by graph-associahedra. The geometric and combinatorial properties of the complex as well as of the polyhedra are given. These spaces are natural generalizations of the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford compactification of the real moduli space of curves.     

On extremally disconnected topological groups

We introduce the notion of a partially selective ultrafilter and prove that (a) if G is an extremally disconnected topological group and p is a converging nonprincipal ultrafilter on G containing a countable discrete subset, then p is partially selective, and (b) the existence of a nonprincipal partially selective ultrafilter on a countable set implies the existence of a P-point in ω^∗. Thus it is consistent with ZFC that there is no extremally disconnected topological group containing a countable discrete nonclosed subset.     

Momentum transport and torque scaling in Taylor-Couette flow from an analogy with turbulent convection

We generalize an analogy between rotating and stratified shear flows. This analogy is summarized in Table 1. We use this analogy in the unstable case (centrifugally unstable flow vs. convection) to compute the torque in Taylor-Couette configuration, as a function of the Reynolds number. At low Reynolds numbers, when most of the dissipation comes from the mean flow, we predict that the non-dimensional torque G = T/ν² L, where L is the cylinder length, scales with Reynolds number R and gap width η, G = 1.46η^3/2(1 - η)^-7/4 R ^3/2. At larger Reynolds number, velocity fluctuations become non-negligible in the dissipation. In these regimes, there is no exact power law dependence the torque versus Reynolds. Instead, we obtain logarithmic corrections to the classical ultra-hard (exponent 2) regimes: G = 0.50 . These predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with avail-able experimental data.
