Experimental and numerical analysis of cylindrical turbulators in a double pipe heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions

In the present work, the use of cylindrical turbulators in a double pipe heat exchanger has been investigated. Cylindrical fin type of turbulators has been placed circumferentially separated by 90° on the outer side of an inner pipe at a regular pitch. Experimental studies were undertaken for different air flow rates in a turbulent regime whose Reynolds number range between 2500 and 10000. Heat transfer characteristics like Nu and friction factor have been experimentally determined. Parametric studies were conducted by changing the pitch and also the orientation of the turbulators. Nu and friction factor were found to increase as the pitch is reduced. A model with alternatively changed orientation outperformed others by exhibiting highest Nu and reduced friction factor.

Efficient Collocation Schemes for Singular Boundary Value Problems

We discuss an error estimation procedure for the global error of collocation schemes applied to solve singular boundary value problems with a singularity of the first kind. This a posteriori estimate of the global error was proposed by Stetter in 1978 and is based on the idea of Defect Correction, originally due to Zadunaisky. Here, we present a new, carefully designed modification of this error estimate which not only results in less computational work but also appears to perform satisfactorily for singular problems. We give a full analytical justification for the asymptotical correctness of the error estimate when it is applied to a general nonlinear regular problem. For the singular case, we are presently only able to provide computational evidence for the full convergence order, the related analysis is still work in progress. This global estimate is the basis for a grid selection routine in which the grid is modified with the aim to equidistribute the global error. This procedure yields meshes suitable for an efficient numerical solution. Most importantly, we observe that the grid is refined in a way reflecting only the behavior of the solution and remains unaffected by the unsmooth direction field close to the singular point.     

水斗非定常自由水膜流三维贴体数值模拟

本研究采用水斗三维非正交贴体坐标系进行了非定常自由水膜流动的数值解析。对不规则水斗内表面采用三维非正交贴体坐标系下离散点进行拟合,推导了曲面离散点的法向矢量和曲面微元面高斯曲率、平均曲率等几何特征量的计算公式,进而导出流体粒子在运动方向上曲率计算式。在水斗三维贴体坐标系中,还推导了流体粒子在水斗曲面上的运动控制方程。最后对某水轮机水斗内表面非定常自由水膜流进行了数值模拟,得到其非定常水膜流态分布。     

Effective magnetic properties of a composite material with circular conductive elements

Effective magnetic properties of a composite meta-material consisting of periodically arranged circular conductive elements are studied theoretically. A general expression for the effective bulk permeability is obtained with mutual effects and lattice ordering being taken into account. The resonance frequency of the permeability is found to be strongly dependent on the size and shape of the unit cell. Frequency dispersion of the permeability is studied with special attention paid to the frequency range, where negative values of the permeability are possible. Corresponding recommendations for optimisation of the meta-materials with negative permeability are made. The results are confirmed by numerical simulations of the finite structure behaviour in an external magnetic field. Received 19 April 2002 Published online 31 July 2002     

The Kissing Triangles: The Aesthetics of Mathematical Discovery

Papert's (1978) appeal to reconsider the power and possibilities of the aesthetic in mathematics learning is often ignored in mathematics education research. This paper begins with the premise, put forth by Dewey (1934), that the aesthetic structures many dimensions of inquiry and experience. In the same way that using particular paintings, musical compositions, or even everyday experiences has been instrumental to attempts by philosophers to understand the aesthetic dimensions of meaning and experience in artistic domains, I propose that analysing a particular encounter with mathematics may help reveal the nature and role of the often nebulous responses of elegance, beauty, and `fit' to which mathematicians lay claim in their mathematical activity. To achieve this, I draw on and adapt the defining features of the aesthetic character of experience set forth by the aesthetician Beardsley (1982). This, in turn, sheds light on the role thataesthetics can play in mathematical inquiry and experience, and provides initial categories and conjectures that can be used to investigate the potential roles of aesthetics in mathematics learning contexts.This revised version was published online in September 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Highly accurate calculation of radial spheroidal functions

A new method for calculating the radial spheroidal functions of the first kind is proposed for the arguments that are greater than unity in modulus. A well-known representation of these functions is refined and used for this purpose. The constructs and the software implementation proposed in the paper provide an efficient tool for the calculation of the functions with a desired accuracy in a wide range of parameters.     

场协同理论在椭圆型流动中的数值验证

本文用数值模拟的方法，通过四个椭圆型流动传热的例子验证了场协同理论的正确性．结果表明，场协同理论不仅适合于抛物型流动，亦适合于复杂的有回流的椭圆型流动．     

增湿活化反应器内喷水脱硫试验研究

本文介绍在热态脱硫试验台上进行的生石灰和消石灰的喷水活化脱硫试验,研究了Ca/S比、饱和温距、入口烟气SO2浓度、烟气速度及水喷嘴雾化风对脱硫效率和钙利用率的影响规律,对两种脱硫剂的脱硫活性进行了比较,并对喷水增湿提高脱硫效率的机理进行了分析。研究表明,喷水增湿使两种脱硫剂的活性都有明显提高,生石灰具有价格优势。     

轴流风扇叶片端导叶作用的研究

本文采用数值方法研究了叶片端导叶对轴流风扇性能的影响。通过与普通开式轴流风扇比较,分析了叶片端导叶对内部流动作用的机理.数值计算结果表明:叶片端导叶的安装位置将影响轴流风扇气动效率,安装叶片端导叶不能提高风扇静压升,但是在压力面安装时能有效地减小风扇叶顶泄漏流与主流的掺混损失;在设计流量下,压力面安装叶片端导叶使泄漏涡的作用范围较小,涡核更靠近吸力面;吸力面安装叶片端导叶弱化了泄漏涡的强度但没有减小泄漏涡的作用范围。
