A new type of hydrodynamic bearing is presented. Instead of physically forming a wedged space by two plates, the bearing consists of two parallel plates, with regions of different wettability on one of the surfaces. With the introduction of such a wettability-patterned surface, the hydrodynamic pressure can be built up because the local slip length over different regions in the bearing is different and results in similar velocity profiles to that in a traditional wedged bearing. Molecular dynamics simulation results indicate that the hydrodynamic pressure is proportional to the shear velocity. However, as the shear velocity exceeds a critical value, the slip length becomes infinite and the hydrodynamic bearing loses its function.  相似文献

The dynamics of a rotating elastic nano-ring driven in a viscous fluid by an externally applied torque about a specific axis is studied using elasto-hydrodynamic simulations. We show that a helical deformation of the ring filament is excited, and that this leads to directed propulsion which is independent of the direction of rotation. It is found that the propulsive force and efficiency initially increase as the torque is increased, and then decrease discontinuously at a buckling transition at a critical torque. This unique propulsive behavior at the shape transition arises due to its specific geometry, i.e., circularity of an elastic filament. The implications of the behavior for artificial microscopic devices are discussed.  相似文献

A GaN light emitting diodes (LED) wafer was coated with Pt, Au, Al and In. The photoluminescence (PL) excited from wafer back shows that Pt and Au coating can quench the PL while In and Al can increase the PL intensity by eight times and make the wavelength red shift. When connected to the Pt with a wire, indium can also quench the PL. The potential difference between any two kinds of the metals was measured and the PL intensity from each coated area showed a remarkable pertinence to the coating metal potentials. A built-in potential barrier model is proposed to explain results.  相似文献

We present a theory for low-Reynolds-number axisymmetric swimmers and a general strategy for the computation of strokes of maximal efficiency. An explicit equation characterizing optimal strokes is derived, and numerical strategies to obtain solutions are discussed. The merits of this approach are demonstrated by applying it to two concrete examples: the three linked spheres of Najafi and Golestanian and the pushmepullyou of Avron, Kenneth, and Oakmin.  相似文献

This Letter concerns with the peristaltic analysis of MHD viscous fluid in a two-dimensional channel with variable viscosity under the effect of slip condition. A long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumption is used in the problem formulation. An exact solution is presented for the case of hydrodynamic fluid while for magnetohydrodynamic fluid a series solution is obtained in the small power of viscosity parameter. The salient features of pumping and trapping phenomena are discussed in detail through the numerical integration. It is noted that an increase in the slip parameter decreases the peristaltic pumping region. Moreover, the size of trapped bolus decreases by increasing the slip parameter.  相似文献

We study the steady terminal orientation of a fore-aft symmetric body as it settles in a viscous fluid. An optimal principle for the settling behavior is discussed based upon entropy production in the system, both in the Stokes limit and the case of near equilibrium states when inertial effects emerge. We show that in the Stokes limit, the entropy production in the system is zero allowing any possible terminal orientation while in the presence of inertia, the particle assumes a horizontal position which coincides with the state of maximum entropy production. Our results are seen to agree well with experimental observations.  相似文献

The tribological properties of three different films commonly used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) under the lubrication of ionic liquid (IL)/water mixtures with various concentrations in the running-in process have been investigated. Results show that coefficients of friction (COFs) and wear rates for low temperature silicon oxide (LTO)/Si3N4 vary in a similar way to the ones for poly-Si/Si3N4 under the lubrications of different IL/water mixtures. In contrast, the differences in COFs and wear rates are more significant in that the COFs and wear rates increase dramatically with the decrease in IL/water concentration in the case of self-mated Si3N4, while the differences in COFs and wear rates for the two other tribopairs are relatively small when the concentration is changed. The period of the running-in process reduces with the increase in IL/water concentration for all the tribopairs. Effective hydrodynamic lubrication can be found in the case of Si3N4/Si3N4 tribopair at higher IL/water concentrations without an evident running-in process, however, such a phenomenon cannot be observed for the other two tribopairs.
