Convergent Flows of Molten Polymers Modeled by Generalized Second-Grade Fluids of Power-Law Type

The molding processes of polymer melts involve geometrically complex dies. Such dies are usually tapered or streamlined to achieve a maximum output rate under conditions of laminar flow. The model of a generalized second-grade fluid of power-law type is used and the results obtained are illustrated by examples of convergent flows in conical and wedge-shaped dies.     

Moments of an exponential functional of random walks and permutations with given descent sets

The exponential functional of simple, symmetric random walks with negative drift is an infinite polynomial Y = 1 + ξ₁ + ξ₁ξ₂ + ξ₁ξ₂ξ₃ + ⋯ of independent and identically distributed non-negative random variables. It has moments that are rational functions of the variables μ _k = E(ξ ^k ) < 1 with universal coefficients. It turns out that such a coefficient is equal to the number of permutations with descent set defined by the multiindex of the coefficient. A recursion enumerates all numbers of permutations with given descent sets in the form of a Pascal-type triangle. Quotient probabilistic normed spaces and completeness results

We introduce the concept of quotient in PN spaces and give some examples. We prove some theorems with regard to the completeness of a quotient.     

Evaluation formulas for Tornheim's type of alternating double series

In this paper, we give some evaluation formulas for Tornheim's type of alternating series by an elementary and combinatorial calculation of the uniformly convergent series. Indeed, we list several formulas for them by means of Riemann's zeta values at positive integers.

     

Bodies of constant width in arbitrary dimension

We give a number of characterizations of bodies of constant width in arbitrary dimension. As an application, we describe a way to construct a body of constant width in dimension n, one of its (n – 1)‐dimensional projection being given. On the Statistics of Partial Quotients of Finite Continued Fractions

We refine the remainder estimate in the asymptotic formula, earlier obtained in a joint paper with V. A. Bykovskii, for Arnold's problem about Gauss-Kuzmin statistics.     

Differential FBG sensor for temperature-compensated high-pressure (or displacement) measurement

A differential fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor with a free active element bulk-modulus for high-pressure (or displacement) measurement is presented. Based on the differential measurement method and an isosceles triangle cantilever structure, problems of cross-sensitivity and chirped signal in FBG sensor are improved both theoretically and experimentally. Preliminary experiments indicate that temperature-compensated measurement results agree well with the theoretical analysis. Displacement measurement sensitivity is 1.75 pm/μm, and the estimated pressure measurement resolution can reach 0.27 MPa in case the wavelength shift measurement resolution is 0.01 nm.
