Selective Propargylation of Carbonyl Compounds and Imines with Barium Reagents

A Barbier‐type regioselective propargylation of aldehydes and ketones with (3‐bromobut‐1‐ynyl)trimethylsilane has been achieved using reactive barium as a low‐valent metal in THF. Especially in the case of ketones, the corresponding homopropargylic alcohols form almost exclusively. In the reaction of α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl compounds, only 1,2‐adducts have been observed. This method is also applicable to propargylation of imines, and the corresponding homopropargylic amines are obtained regiospecifically in good yields with diastereomeric ratios of up to 87:13.     

Nanometric Antimony Powder Synthesis by Activated Alkaline Hydride Reduction of Antimony Pentachloride

A novel chemical reduction method using an activated alkaline hydride (LiH or NaH-t-BuONa) in tetrahydrofuran solvent has been applied to antimony salt reduction. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies have been carried out to characterize the morphology and structure of the materials. Alkali hydride nature influence has been proved. In both cases the process allows to prepare antimony particles in nanometer range from few nanometers to about 20nm which could be used as anodic materials for lithium–ion batteries. With lithium hydride well-crystallized particles inclined to agglomeration were observed whereas finely dispersed amorphous particles were pointing out after activated sodium hydride reduction.     

Kinetic studies of antimony and selenium atomization processes including a chemical modifier during their determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

We have studied antimony and selenium atomization processes including a chemical matrix modifier (palladium-containing activated carbon) during their determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. We have developed and fine-tuned an experimental setup for determining the kinetic characteristics (activation energy and frequency factor) for element atomization processes from measurements in the initial section of the analytical signal. We provide a rationale for the most likely mechanism for the interactions that occur. The results of the kinetic studies of the atomization processes showed that the modifier we developed was highly effective, as a result of formation of a thermally stable condensed system C-Pd-A (where A is the analyte). __________ Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Spektroskopii, Vol. 73, No. 4, pp. 530–534, July–August, 2006.     

Effects of barium on the nonlinear electrical characteristics and dielectric properties of SnO2-based varistors

The effects of barium on electrical and dielectric properties of the SnO_2·Co_2O_3·Ta_2O_5 varistor system sintered at 1250℃ for 60min were investigated. It is found that barium significantly improves the nonlinear properties. The breakdown electrical field increases from 378.0 to 2834.5V/mm, relative dielectric constant (at 1kHz) falls from 1206 to 161 and the resistivity (at 1kHz) rises from 60.3 to 1146.5kΩ·cm with an increase of BaCO_3 concentration from 0mol% to 1.00mol%. The sample with 1.00mol% barium has the best nonlinear electrical property and the highest nonlinear coefficient (α=29.2). A modified defect barrier model is introduced to illustrate the grain-boundary barrier formation of barium-doped SnO_{2}-based varistors.

A rodlike barium ferrite precursor with an average size of 0.72～19.6 μm and aspect ratio of 2.6～8.3 has been successfully prepared in an inverse microemulsion consisting of isooctane, cetanyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), n-C₄H₉OH and water with ammonia and ammonium oxalate as precipitants. On sintering at 780(C, the rodlike precursor particles could be transformed into rodlike particles of barium ferrite(BaFe₁₂O₁₉) with the average size and aspect ratio of 0.69～18.2 μm and 2.3～5.8, respectively. The effect of volume ratio of aqueous phase to oleic phase, the starting concentrations of metal ions and the starting concentration ratios of metal ions to precipitants were investigated.     

Thermal and structure analysis of FeSO4·H2O-BaO2 mixtures

Investigations on the thermal decomposition of FeSO₄·H₂O-BaO₂ mixtures were carried out under isothermal conditions by using simultaneously solid electrolyte cell (EMF-method). Evoked interactions producing oxygen in the temperature range 553-673 K were established by means of a solid electrolyte oxygen analyzer. Based on Mössbauer spectroscopy data and X-ray analysis it was proved that these reactions were associated with the release of oxygen from barium peroxide, oxidation of ferrosulphate-monohydrate to FeOHSO₄, and formation of barium ferrites such as BaFe₂O₄ and BaFe₁₂O₁₉.     

Preparation and catalytic performance of superfine Ni/BaTiO3 catalyst

Superfine Ni/BaTiO₃ catalysts were prepared by impregnation method and used successfully for CO₂ reforming CH₄ to syngas. The effects of preparation method and the temperatures of calcination, reduction and reaction on the catalytic activity of the Ni/BaTiO₃ system were investigated. Phase Transitions,Thermal Desorption of Gases,and Electroconduction in BaCeO<Subscript>3</Subscript>, a Base for High-Temperature Protonic Conductors

Investigations of phase transitions in barium cerate are carried out by methods of dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal desorption of gases and temperature dependences of electroconduction in dry and humid air are studied. Barium cerate exhibits complex polymorphism, undergoing a number of structural conversions at 300– 1300 K. The peaks in the spectra of thermal desorption of CO₂ and H₂O correlate with variations in the crystal lattice. Shape-persistent cyclyne-type azamacrocycles: synthesis, unusual light-emitting characteristics, and specific recognition of the Sb(V) ion

Simple members of arene-azaarenecyclynes as a novel family of geometrically-controlled and shape-persistent azamacrocycles have been synthesized. Noteworthy is the specific recognition function for Sb(V). The synthesized azamacrocycles, in particular the Sb(V) complex, have unusually strong light-emitting property.
