Highly diastereoselective multicomponent synthesis of polysubstituted 2-hydroxy-2-trifluoromethylpiperidineswith four and five stereogenic centers

The Michael–Mannich cascade cyclization of cyano olefins, ethyl 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-oxobutanoate, aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate provides convenient stereoselective formation of ethyl 5,5-dicyano-4,6-diaryl-2-hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)piperidine-3-carboxylates with fourstereogenic centers and dialkyl 4,6-diaryl-5-cyano-2-hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)piperidine-3,5-dicarboxylates with five stereogenic centers. Ammonium acetate plays dual role, acting as a base and as a nitrogen source.     

Selective quenching of tryptophanyl fluorescence in bovine serum albumin by the iodide ion

Modified Stern-Volmer equation is obeyed by bovine serum albumin (BSA)-iodide system showing selective quenching of tryptophanyl fluorescence of BSA. The fraction of accessible protein fluorescence is 0.56 and the effective Stern-Volmer constant is 290 M^-1 at pH 7.4 in 0.005 M phosphate buffer at 25°C. Collisional quenching is operative both in the BSA -I⁻¹ system and the model system, tryptophan-I⁻¹. It is supported by the observed relationship between the ratio of quenching rate constants (k _q ) and diffusion coefficients and alsok _q with bulk viscosity.     

Synthesis and characterization of guar gum‐graft‐polyacrylonitrile

Cerium(IV) mediated grafting of polyacrylonitrile on to guar gum was studied. Grafting parameters were studied gravimetrically, as a function of temperature, initiator concentration and Guar to acrylonitrile ratio. Higher temperatures resulted in higher monomer conversion and homopolymer formation. Both monomer conversion and extent of grafting increased with increase in cerium ion concentration in the range studied (0.91–9.12 mmol/l). Similar results were obtained with increase in monomer to guar gum ratio from 1 to 5. Grafting with this initiator was found to be generally good with high grafting efficiencies and low homopolymer formation for most experiments. The copolymers obtained were subjected to alkaline hydrolysis to convert nitrile groups in to carboxylic acid groups and the water absorbency of the resulting anionic guar gum was studied. Indium(I) iodide as a radical initiator: intramolecular cyclization of functionalized bromo-alkynes to substituted tetrahydrofurans

Aryl substituted α-carbonyl bromo-alkynes undergo facile cyclizations to the corresponding substituted 4-methylene-tetrahydrofurans using indium(I) iodide in acetonitrile under sonication in high yields. The reaction is predicted to proceed via a radical process initiated by InI and a plausible radical pathway is suggested.     

Vibrational spectra of (NH4)3ZnCl5

IR and Raman spectra of (NH₄)₃ZnCl₅ have been recorded. The observed spectra have been analysed on the basis of the vibrations of ZnCl ₄ ²⁻ and NH ₄ ⁺ ions. The appearance of multiple Raman bands indicates the presence of two different types of ammonium ions. The effect of anisotropic crystalline field over the ZnCl₄ and NH₄ tetrahedra is also discussed. The assignment of internal modes has been verified by the potential energy distribution calculations.

Oxidative Coupling of Thiols to Disulfides with Ti(IV) in the Presence of NaI under Air Atmosphere

Ti(IV) as TiCl₃(O₃SCF₃) and TiO(O₂CCF₃)₂ are used as efficient catalysts for oxidative coupling of aliphatic, aromatic and heteroaromatic thiols to their disulfides in the presence of NaI under air atmosphere.     

Solid-phase oxidative halodecarboxylation of β-arylacrylic acids with the ceric ammonium nitrate—alkali halide system

The solid-phase oxidation of cinnamic, 4-methoxy- and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acids with Ce(NH₄)₂(NO₃)₆—MHal system leads to β-halostyrenes. Similar procedure in the absence of a metal halide results in a cleavage of the C=C bond giving the corresponding benzaldehydes. Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. The samarium(II)-mediated intermolecular couplings of ketones and β-alkoxyacrylates: a short asymmetric synthesis of an antifungal γ-butyrolactone

The samarium(II) iodide-mediated coupling of ketones with β-alkoxyacrylates gives β-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactones in moderate yield. The process has been applied to the asymmetric synthesis of an antifungal, γ-butyrolactone natural product.     

Synthesis of poly-yne polymers containing transition metals,disilane, disiloxane and phosphine groups in the main chain

The synthesis and characterization of metal poly-yne polymers containing disilane, disiloxane and phosphine groups in the main chain are described. The platinum and palladium poly-yne polymers were synthesized by polycondensation reactions between a metal chloride and an α, ω-bisethynyl complex in amines in the presence of cuprous iodide as a catalyst. The nickel poly-yne polymers were synthesized by an alkynyl ligand exchange reaction between a nickel acetylide and an α, ω-bisethynyl complex in diethylamine in the presence of cuprous iodide as a catalyst. The reaction of the platinum poly-yne polymer, containing disiloxane groups in the main chain, with copper (I) salts afforded adducts of η-²-bonded σ-acetylide polymer complexes. The reactions of the palladium poly-yne polymer, containing phosphine groups in the main chain, with transition-metal carbonyl complexes afforded polymer complexes which have phosphorus in the main chain-transition-metal bonds. A concentrated solution of the platinum poly-yne polymer containing disiloxane groups in the main chain forms a lyotropic liquid crystal in dichloromethane or 1, 2-dichloroethane.
