Xylanolytic enzyme production by anAspergillus niger isolate

Production of xylanolytic enzymes by anAspergillus niger CCMI 850 isolate was investigated in batch cultures. The effect of the composition of a fermentation medium that did not include chemical inducers, on β-xylanase, β-xylosidase, α-l-arabinofuranosidase, and total cellulase activity was studied. With 4% xylan as the carbon source, about 65 U/mL of β-xylanase was obtained, whereas the total cellulase activity was undetectable, under the specified conditions. This β-xylanase activity represents the highest reported for a wild-type strain ofA. niger. The effect of pH and temperature on the activity of β-xylanase was studied. Partial characterization of the β-xylanase showed that with insoluble birchwood as substrate theK _m andV _max were 0.3 mM and 19 μmol/min, respectively. Aspects of using the crude β-xylanase preparation for applications in the pulp and paper industry were discussed.     

Determination of Inorganic Ions in Fertilizer Industry Wastewater by Ion Chromatography

The aim of this work is development of methodology for analysis of inorganic cations (sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium and calcium) in fertilizer industry wastewater. Method development includes optimization of eluent flow rate and concentration of eluent competing ion in order to obtain optimal separation within reasonable analysis time. For that purpose artificial neural network retention model was developed and used in combination with normalized resolution product criteria function. Developed artificial neural network retention model shows good predictive ability R² ≥ 0.9983. The determined ion chromatographic parameters enable baseline separation of all components of interest. By performing validation procedure and number of statistical tests it is shown that developed ion chromatographic method has superior performance characteristic: linearity R² ≥ 0.9984, recovery = 99.81% − 99.44%, repeatability RSD ≤ 0.52%. That result proves that proposed method can be used for routine monitoring analysis in fertilizer industry.     

Applications of Thermal Analysis and Coupled Techniques in Pharmaceutical Industry

Thermal analysis methods are well-established techniques in research laboratories of pharmaceutical industry. The robustness and sensitivity of instrumentation, the introduction of automation and of reliable software according to the industrial needs widened considerably the areas of applications in the last decade. Calibration of instruments and validation of results follow the state of the art of cGMP as for other analytical techniques. Thermal analysis techniques are especially useful for the study of the behavior of the poly-phasic systems drug substances and excipients and find a unique place for new delivery systems. Since change of temperature and moisture occur by processing and storage, changes of the solid state may have a considerable effect on activity, toxicity and stability of compounds. Current requirements of the International Conference of Harmonisation for the characterization and the quantitation of polymorphism in new entities re-enforce the position of thermal analysis techniques. This challenging task needs the use of complementary methods. Combined techniques and microcalorimetry demonstrate their advantages. This article reviews the current use of thermal analysis and combined techniques in research and development and in production. The advantage of commercially coupled techniques to thermogravimetry is emphasized with some examples. Contributions to the Optimization of a Caprolactam Production Plant by Radiotracer Techniques

Residence time spectra and material distributions in an operating caprolactam production plant were measured by means of sodium 24, bromine 82 and technetium 99m. The results of the tracerexperiments contributed to an optimization of the plant.     

Towards a comprehensive exploitation of agrofood residues: Olive tree – olive oil as example

A comprehensive use of residues from the agrofood industry requires development of a number of steps – discussed in this article taking as a model the olive tree – olive oil binomial – consisting of: (i) extraction, identification and quantitation of valuable products (with isolation of individual compounds, if required); (ii) assessment of beneficial effects (which could be made mainly through metabolomics); (iii) improvement of cultivation varieties (through cross-breeding or other agricultural resources); (iv) commercialization as nutraceuticals, food supplements, pharmaceuticals or even as antibacterial and antifoam agents in water treatment plants; (v) use of the final residues to produce compost, foodstuffs, biogas or heat (after checking the characteristics of these residues which can be very different from those of the original residue). This working scheme may be applied to any other system to break the traditional one cultivation–one commercial product scheme.     

Radiometrische Bandwaage mit Rechnerschaltkreis zur Signalaufbereitung

Es wird eine radiometrische Bandwaage zur Koksaustragsmengen-Messung in BHT-Kokereien beschrieben. Voranstellend werden einige analytische Ausdrücke zur theoretischen Behandlung dieses Bandwaagentyps mitgeteilt. Die Waage zeichnet sich durch hohe Stabilität der Anzeige, durch die Möglichkeit des routinemäßigen Umsetzens von Meßstelle zu Meßstelle innerhalb kurzer Zeit und durch einen relativ kleinen Wägefehler (Meßunsicherheit ≦ 2,9%) aus. Die Signalaufbereitung innerhalb der Elektronik erfolgt durchgängig digital unter Verwendung eines Rechnerschaltkreises.     

Beiträge der Radiotracertechnik zur Rationalisierung einer großtechnischen Anlage zur Caprolactamproduktion

This paper reviews ways in which radioactive tracer techniques can he used to improve the efficiency of a caprolactam production plant, Residence time spectra and material distributions in different parts of the plant were measured by application of sodium 24, bromine 82 and technetium 99m. The investigations led to improved cumeneoxidators and gave useful informations on the catalytic decomposition of the phenolic tar and the hydrogenation process of phenol. It could he shown that the construction of the lactam extractor must he varied and the results of the tracerexperiments made in the distillation unit contributed to a higher quality of the final product.
