Locally Adaptive Wavelet Empirical Bayes Estimation of a Location Parameter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The traditional empirical Bayes (EB) model is considered with the parameter being a location parameter, in the situation when the Bayes estimator has a finite degree of smoothness and, possibly, jump discontinuities at several points. A nonlinear wavelet EB estimator based on wavelets with bounded supports is constructed, and it is shown that a finite number of jump discontinuities in the Bayes estimator do not affect the rate of convergence of the prior risk of the EB estimator to zero. It is also demonstrated that the estimator adjusts to the degree of smoothness of the Bayes estimator, locally, so that outside the neighborhoods of the points of discontinuities, the posterior risk has a high rate of convergence to zero. Hence, the technique suggested in the paper provides estimators which are significantly superior in several respects to those constructed earlier.  相似文献

A Bayesian approach is used to analyze the seismic events with magnitudes at least 4.7 on Taiwan. Following the idea proposed by Ogata (1988,Journal of the American Statistical Association,83, 9–27), an epidemic model for the process of occurrence times given the observed magnitude values is considered, incorporated with gamma prior distributions for the parameters in the model, while the hyper-parameters of the prior are essentially determined by the seismic data in an earlier period. Bayesian inference is made on the conditional intensity function via Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The results yield acceptable accuracies in predicting large earthquake events within short time periods.  相似文献

We present a bounded probability algorithm for the computation of the Chowforms of the equidimensional components of an algebraic variety. In particular, this gives an alternative procedure for the effective equidimensional decomposition of the variety, since each equidimensional component is characterized by its Chow form. The expected complexity of the algorithm is polynomial in the size and the geometric degree of the input equation system defining the variety. Hence it improves (or meets in some special cases) the complexity of all previous algorithms for computing Chow forms. In addition to this, we clarify the probability and uniformity aspects, which constitutes a further contribution of the paper. The algorithm is based on elimination theory techniques, in line with the geometric resolution algorithm due to M. Giusti, J. Heintz, L. M. Pardo, and their collaborators. In fact, ours can be considered as an extension of their algorithm for zero-dimensional systems to the case of positive-dimensional varieties. The key element for dealing with positive-dimensional varieties is a new Poisson-type product formula. This formula allows us to compute the Chow form of an equidimensional variety from a suitable zero-dimensional fiber. As an application, we obtain an algorithm to compute a subclass of sparse resultants, whose complexity is polynomial in the dimension and the volume of the input set of exponents. As another application, we derive an algorithm for the computation of the (unique) solution of a generic overdetermined polynomial equation system.  相似文献

We introduce a multigrid algorithm for the solution of a second order elliptic equation in three dimensions. For the approximation of the solution we use a partially ordered hierarchy of finite-volume discretisations. We show that there is a relation with semicoarsening and approximation by more-dimensional Haar wavelets. By taking a proper subset of all possible meshes in the hierarchy, a sparse grid finite-volume discretisation can be constructed.The multigrid algorithm consists of a simple damped point-Jacobi relaxation as the smoothing procedure, while the coarse grid correction is made by interpolation from several coarser grid levels.The combination of sparse grids and multigrid with semi-coarsening leads to a relatively small number of degrees of freedom,N, to obtain an accurate approximation, together with anO(N) method for the solution. The algorithm is symmetric with respect to the three coordinate directions and it is fit for combination with adaptive techniques.To analyse the convergence of the multigrid algorithm we develop the necessary Fourier analysis tools. All techniques, designed for 3D-problems, can also be applied for the 2D case, and — for simplicity — we apply the tools to study the convergence behaviour for the anisotropic Poisson equation for this 2D case.  相似文献

Reference analysis is one of the most successful general methods to derive noninformative prior distributions. In practice, however, reference priors are often difficult to obtain. Recently developed theory for conditionally reducible natural exponential families identifies an attractive reparameterization which allows one, among other things, to construct an enriched conjugate prior. In this paper, under the assumption that the variance function is simple quadratic, the order-invariant group reference prior for the above parameter is found. Furthermore, group reference priors for the mean- and natural parameter of the families are obtained. A brief discussion of the frequentist coverage properties is also presented. The theory is illustrated for the multinomial and negative-multinomial family. Posterior computations are especially straightforward due to the fact that the resulting reference distributions belong to the corresponding enriched conjugate family. A substantive application of the theory relates to the construction of reference priors for the Bayesian analysis of two-way contingency tables with respect to two alternative parameterizations.  相似文献

Given two random variables (X, Y) the condition of unbiasedness states that:E(X |Y=y)=y andE(Y |X=x)=x both almost surely (a.s.). If the prior onY is proper and has finite expectation or non-negative support, unbiasedness impliesX=Y a.s. This paper examines the implications of unbiasedness when the prior onY is improper. Since the improper case can be meaningfully analysed in a finitely additive framework, we revisit the whole issue of unbiasedness from this perspective. First we argue that a notion weaker than equality a.s., named coincidence, is more appropriate in a finitely additive setting. Next we discuss the meaning of unbiasedness from a Bayesian and fiducial perspective. We then show that unbiasedness and finite expectation ofY imply coincidence betweenX andY, while a weaker conclusion follows if the improper prior onY is only assumed to have positive support. We illustrate our approach throughout the paper by revisiting some examples discussed in the recent literature.This work was partially supported by C.N.R. grant N.80.02970.10 (G.C.) and by C.N.R. grant altri interventi (P.V.). In this paper, we examine three algorithms in the ABS family and consider their storage requirements on sparse band systems. It is shown that, when using the implicit Cholesky algorithm on a band matrix with band width 2q+1, onlyq additional vectors are required. Indeed, for any matrix with upper band widthq, onlyq additional vectors are needed. More generally, ifa kj 0,j>k, then thejth row ofH i is effectively nonzero ifj>i>k. The arithmetic operations involved in solving a band matrix by this method are dominated by (1/2)n 2 q. Special results are obtained forq-band tridiagonal matrices and cyclic band matrices.The implicit Cholesky algorithm may require pivoting if the matrixA does not possess positive-definite principal minors, so two further algorithms were considered that do not require this property. When using the implicit QR algorithm, a matrix with band widthq needs at most 2q additional vectors. Similar results forq-band tridiagonal matrices and cyclic band matrices are obtained.For the symmetric Huang algorithm, a matrix with band widthq requiresq–1 additional vectors. The storage required forq-band tridiagonal matrices and cyclic band matrices are again analyzed.This work was undertaken during the visit of Dr. J.
