In the present work we study the photonic band structure (PBS) and the polarization state of the Bloch eigenmodes of a two-dimensional magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) with square lattice formed from magneto-optically (MO) active cylinders. The refraction of light at the boundary of the MPC is analyzed. We found that both—the PBS and eigenmodes of the MPC—are most significantly altered by the MO activity in the vicinity of the degeneracies. For this case we demonstrated the possibility of an abrupt change in the propagation direction of light by the application of a magnetic field. For the Bloch wave vectors and frequencies corresponding to non-degenerate branches, the alteration of the PBS is shown to be negligible and eigenmodes almost completely coincide with linearly TE- and/or TM-polarized eigenmodes of the non-magnetic photonic crystal.  相似文献

A theoretical study of one-dimensional heterostructures composed of alternate layers of a Kerr polaritonic material and a linear dispersive metamaterial is performed. For frequency values at the edges of the non-Bragg zero-ϕeff gap of the heterostructure in the linear regime, a switching from very low to high transmission states is obtained and localized gap solitons of various orders are found, depending on the particular value of the incident power. Soliton solutions are shown to be robust with respect to absorption effects and a study is presented for gap soliton phases at the top and bottom of the zero-ϕeff gap in the case of defocusing and focusing nonlinearities.  相似文献

Three-dimensional SiO2 photonic crystals (PhCs) are fabricated on quartz substrates by the vertical deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy measurement reveals that the samples exhibit an ordered close-packed arrangement of SiO2 spheres. It is found that the position of the [111] photonie band gap (PBG) shifts to a long wavelength (red shift) with increasing sphere size. Gap broadening effects are observed due to the presence of defects in the samples. Moreover, the optical properties of the PBG are very sensitive to the annealing temperature. Our results indicate that the optical properties of the PBG can be easily tuned in the visible region by appropriate experimental parameters, which will be useful for practical applications of PhC optical devices.  相似文献

Generally, dipole mode is a doubly degenerate mode. Theoretical calculations have indicated that the single dipole mode of two-dimensional photonic crystal single point defect cavity shows high polarization property. We present a structure with elongated lattice, which only supports a single y-dipole mode. With this structure we can eliminate the degeneracy, control the lasing action of the cavity and demonstrate the high polarization property of the single dipole mode. In our experiment, the polarization extinction ratio of the y-dipole mode is as high as 51:1.  相似文献

A new technique for an experimental determination of the effective refractive index, group refractive index and dispersion of fibers in a broad near-infrared spectral range is presented. The method is based on a white-light spectral interference which utilizes an unbalanced Michelson interferometer. The effective refractive index is obtained by a direct fitting the cosine function to the spectral interference pattern recorded by a low resolution spectrometer. The method has been tested in the spectral range of 1000-1700 nm both with standard telecommunication fibers and a sample of a photonic fiber. The accuracy of dispersion measurement () exceeds those from the previously reported near-infrared white-light spectral interference methods.  相似文献

This paper presents a design of sharp transmission filters using band edge resonance effects in a hetero-structure composed of one-dimensional photonic crystals with different periods. Assuming that the photonic crystals are made of identical pairs of transparent materials, the band-edge resonance occurs when the periods are distributed in a geometrical progression with a common ratio, r=r c , where r c is a known function of refractive-index modulation, incident angle and the polarization of light. The band-edge resonance results in sharp resonant peaks in the transmission spectrum, with the full width at half maximum of the peaks increasing with an increase in the number of unit cells in each photonic crystal. Furthermore, if M photonic crystals are used to construct the hetero-structure, M−1 resonant peaks with the spacing between kth (1<k<M) and (k−1)th peaks equal to the band gap of the kth photonic crystal form in the transmission spectrum.  相似文献

Optical transmission properties of subwavelength planar fractals in terahertz (THz) frequency regime are studied by means of time-domain spectroscopy. The transmission spectra with multiple pass bands and stop bands are observed. The tunable photonic band gaps are realized by changing the angle between the principle axis of planar fractal and the polarization of THz wave. The possible application of the subwavelength optical component is discussed. We attribute the detected transmittance from subwavelength fractals to localized resonances.  相似文献

Some photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of complex lattices of dielectric cylinders can have an effective refraction index (neffneff) of −1. Subwavelength imaging by a slab of a honeycomb PC of dielectric cylinders with neff=−1neff=1 is investigated and an open resonator with a quality factor higher than 3000 is designed with the same PC. Air–PC interfaces with low reflection are also used for the slab lens and open resonator.  相似文献

We propose a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on coupled dielectric pillars. It is composed of single-row pillar coupled waveguide modulating arms and three-row pillar waveguide 3 dB couplers. The slow light property and transmission loss of the single-row pillar modulating arm are optimized by the plane wave expansion method. A short 3dB coupler is designed based on the modes transformation in three-row pillar waveguide. Finite difference time domain simulations prove the validity of this MZI and show that it has low insertion loss of 1.1 dB and high extinction ratio of 〉 12 dB.  相似文献

Negative refraction and imaging properties of the electromagnetic wave through a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab, which consists of a square lattice of elliptical dielectric rods immersed in the air background, is studied by the plane-wave expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain method. A point source placed in the vicinity of the PC slab can form a good-quality image spot through the PC slab for the incident frequencies within the second photonic band. The calculated result also shows that negative refraction occurs in this kind of PC slab.  相似文献
