Radiation‐induced migration of additives in PVC‐based biomedical disposable devices. Part 1. Surface morphology by AFM and SEM/XEDS

Two different types of plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) used for biomedical disposable devices—extruded and injection moulded—were studied in the non‐sterilized condition and after 25 and 50 kGy of beta irradiation. The polymer surfaces were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an x‐ray energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) and by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The inner surface of two parts of a venous line showed a different morphology according to their original formulation (for extrusion or injection moulding process) and reacted differently on sterilization with beta irradiation. Moulded parts were affected only slightly by the radiation step, whereas the variations were bigger for the extruded parts. In order to gain the best performances for the medical devices studied, the utmost care must be taken in the sterilization step, which should be optimized as well as the other steps of the manufacturing process. On the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of functional equations in n-variables

In this paper we investigate a generalization of the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability for a functional equation of the form f(φ(X))=?(X)f(X)+ψ(X) and the stability in the sense of Ger for the functional equation of the form f(φ(X))=?(X)f(X), where X lie in n-variables. As a consequence, we obtain a stability result in the sense of Hyers-Ulam-Rassias, Gǎvruta, and Ger for some well-known equations such as the gamma, beta, and G-function type's equations.     

Some families of hypergeometric polynomials and associated integral representations

The main object of this paper is to investigate several general families of hypergeometric polynomials and their associated single-, double-, and triple-integral representations. Some known or new consequences of the general results presented here, involving such classical orthogonal polynomials as the Jacobi, Laguerre, Hermite, and Bessel polynomials, and various other relatively less familiar hypergeometric polynomials, are also considered. Each of the integral representations, which are derived in this paper, may be viewed also as a linearization relationship for the product of two different members of the associated family of hypergeometric polynomials.     

Asymmetric Baeyer—Villiger oxidation: control of stereoelectronic demand

The recent development of asymmetric Baeyer—Villiger oxidation of prochiral and racemic ketones is briefly summarized, focusing on the regio- and stereocontrol of the oxidation attained by regulating the stereoelectronic demand in the step of rearrangement of the Criegee intermediate.Based on the report presented at the International Conference Modern Trends in Organoelement and Polymer Chemistry dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the A. Investigation of gas chromatographic interaction mechanism on permethylated cyclodextrins by molecular modelling

Summary The capillary gas chromatographic retention behavior of -pinene and tricyclene has been investigated on stationary phases of different polarities. On all but one of the columns employed, tricyclene eluted before -pinene; only permethylated -cyclodextrins dissolved in moderately polar polisiloxanes gave a reversed elution order. The intermolecular interactions which caused the unexpected retention behavior were investigated in detail, applying methods of computer simulation. To achieve this, we have developed a calculation algorithm on the basis of molecular mechanical optimizations and programmed it in a macro. This makes it possible to systematically investigate a given configuration space in which all the possible interactions can take place. It was shown that permethylated -cyclodextrin as host molecule for both guest molecules offers an optimum cavity size. As a result the number of energetically favorable contacts between host and guest molecules as well as the strength of the interactions in this stationary phase were larger. As a consequence the elution order, normally only influenced by the vapor pressure of the compounds at a given temperature, was changed. Nonspecific interactions played an especially important role for these kinds of substances.     

Synthesis and Characterization of Tetraosmium Carbonyl Complexes Containing a Bridging CO2 Ligand

Treatment of (thd)H (thd=2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptandionate) with excess Os₃(CO)₁₂ in an autoclave at 180°C gives the formation of a brown metal chain complex [Os₂(CO)₅(thd)₂]₂ (1) and a yellow CO₂ cluster complex [Os₄(-H)(-CO₂)(thd)(CO)₁₃] (2) in low yields. Complex 2 was fully identified by a combination of spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction study, showing a unique CO₂ ligand bridging a triosmium metal fragment, Os₃(-H)(CO)₁₀ and a monometallic osmium fragment, Os(CO)₃(thd). Upon treatment of 1 with Me₃NO at an elevated temperature, oxidation of the CO ligand occurred at the position trans to the unique CO₂ ligand on the Os(CO)₃(thd) fragment, giving the formation of a second CO₂ cluster [Os₄(-H)(-CO₂)(thd)(CO)₁₂(NCMe)] (3), which is stabilized by a weakly coordinated acetonitrile molecule.     

Phosphorescence lifetime of naphthalene and phenanthrene in aggregated aromatic molecule-β-cyclodextrin-precipitant complexes

Aggregated aromatic molecule--cyclodextrin-precipitant complexes exhibit long-lived phosphorescence at room temperature in water after the chemical binding of oxygen. The temperature dependences of the phosphorescence lifetimes of naphthalene-h₈, naphthalene-de, and phenanthrene in the aggregates were measured. For example, the phosphorescence lifetimes of naphthalene-d₈ aggregated with -cyclodextrin and cyclohexane are equal to 25.1, 17.6, and 6.8 s at 77, 276, and 347 K, respectively, and that of phenanthrene aggregated with isooctane and -cyclodextrin are 3.24, 3.06, and 1.26 s at 268, 274, and 335 K, respectively. The temperature dependences of the phosphorescence lifetimes at room temperature are determined by the rate constants of the radiative and nonradiative transitions from the triplet state of an aromatic molecule.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. New approach to nonracemic 1-alkylamino-3-aryloxypropan-2-ols belonging to β-blockers via cyclic sulfites

Nonracemic -blockers, viz., (S)-propranolol and (S)-timolol, were prepared from (S)-glycidol in three steps consisting in the reaction with SOCl₂ followed by the reaction of the resulting (4S)-4-chloromethyl-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxathiolanes with the corresponding phenol and the final cleavage of (4R)-aryloxymethyl sulfites under the action of amines in DMF.     

A New Tool in Peptide Engineering: A Photoswitchable Stilbene‐type β‐Hairpin Mimetic

Peptide secondary structure mimetics are important tools in medicinal chemistry, as they provide analogues of endogenous peptides with new physicochemical and pharmacological properties. The development, synthesis, photochemical investigation, and conformational analysis of a stilbene‐type β‐hairpin mimetic capable of light‐triggered conformational changes have been achieved. In addition to standard spectroscopic techniques (nuclear Overhauser effects, amide temperature coefficients, circular dichroism spectroscopy), the applicability of self‐diffusion measurements (longitudinal eddy current delay pulsed‐field gradient spin echo (LED‐PGSE) NMR technique) in conformational studies of oligopeptides is demonstrated. The title compound shows photoisomerization of the stilbene chromophore, resulting in a change in solution conformation between an unfolded structure and a folded β‐hairpin.     

Solubility enhancement of triflumizole by host-guest interaction with β-cyclodextrin

Summary The solubility enhancement of triflumizole, a systemic fungicide, by -cyclodextrin inclusion complexation was investigated by electron absorption spectroscopy. The respective association constant determined by different methods was estimated to 470±20M ^–1 in aqueous solution. A model for the host-guest complexation was deduced by molecular calculations.

Löslichkeitsverbesserung von Triflumizole durchHost-Guest-Complexierung mit -Cyclodextrin

Zusammenfassung Die Löslichkeitsverbesserung des systemischen Fungizids Triflumizole durch Komplexierung mit -Cyclodextrin wurde mittels Elektronenabsorptionsspektroskopie untersucht. Die entsprechende Stabilitätskonstante wurde durch verschiedene Methoden erfaßt und betrug im wäßrigen Medium 470±20M ^–1. Ein Model für denHost-Guest-Complex wurde durch Molekülrechnungen erstellt.
