Linear absorbing boundary conditions for surface water wave propagation

Summary The meaning of linear absorbing boundary conditions for periodic water waves in elliptical approaches is discussed. It is found that the direction of propagation of the waves must be known for reliable boundary conditions and that the energy dissipation of waves running parallel to a boundary in general cannot be modelled in the framework of a linear theory. Thermal expansion of a rig

Summary We have estimated and measured the daily thermal expansion of an oceanographic platform. This has been found negligible as far as the calibration of a satellite altimeter is concerned.     

Observable signals of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking

The observable consequences of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) are reviewed here. Implications of scenarios both with a neutralino and a slepton as the next lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) are surveyed in relation to hadronic ande ⁺ e ^- colliders. We also discuss the phenomenological consequences of the NLSP decaying slowly, giving rise to delayed events in the detectors.The importance of distinguishing signals of GMSB models from those of the commonly discussed supergravity-type theories is emphasized.

Focusing-defocusing phenomena of radio echo signal after passage of the morning solar terminator

Summary Campaign results of high-repetition ionospheric soundings, performed at the ionospheric station of Rome using a Digisonde 128P, are presented. We introduce an index derived from run rapid ionograms that can be used to detect oscillations of isodensity surfaces ofF ionospheric region started by morning solar terminator.

Ocean surface films measured by interferential microwave probe

Summary Measurements on sea surface films were conducted during five separate experimental periods in the following marine areas: the Sicilian Channel, the Gulf of Maine (spring and fall periods), Bermuda, and the Pacific Ocean West of Southern California. The measurements consisted in surface elevation sampling using an interferential microwave probe with frequency spectra evaluation. Wave spectra were performed for both clean and film-covered sea surface conditions to determine the wave attenuation ratio within the 2–20 Hz spectral range. The method is able to detect, chart and characterize sea surface films. Theoretical analyses of the results yield several viscoelastic film parameters: the modulus of elasticity, the relaxation frequency and the maximum of the damping ratio as a function of wave frequency. The analysed data are interpreted to infer film weathering effects, surface concentration of film-forming constituents, and compactness of the organic sea surface film.     

Phase transitions in chlorobenzene-cis-decalin mixtures

The dielectric constant ?' and loss tangent tan δ of chlorobenzene-cis-decalin mixtures have been measured in the temperature range 77 K to 330 K and frequency range 0.1 to 100 kHz. On cooling, ?' increases with decreasing temperature upto about 135 K, after which it drops rapidly with decreasing T followed by a slow decrease. This indicates that the liquid mixture goes to an amorphous phase which transforms to a glass phase of restricted dipole rotation below T_g; however, the peak in ?' is due to relaxation in the amorphous phase (α relaxation) and does not give an exact T_g. On heating, the behaviour of the cooling curve is retraced upto 160 K, after which ?' drops suddenly to a value lower than that at 77 K in the glass phase. This indicates the transition to a crystalline phase in which dipole rotational freedom is completely lost. The crystalline phase changes to a eutectic liquid phase of high ?' at a temperature (200 K) lower than the melting point of chlorobenzene and cis-decalin. Dielectric dispersion is observed only in the glass and amorphous phases. The dielectric relaxation time is independent of the concentration of chlorobenzene.     

Calculation of vertical ionization potentials of difluoramine by perturbation corrections to koopmans' theorem

The vertical ionization potentials of difluoramine are calculated by perturbation corrections to Koopmans' theorem. The calculation shows that difluoraimine has three overlapping bands between 15 and 16 eV. The calculated results compare well with the experimental values. The photoelectron spectrum of difluoramine is compared with that of OF₂ and CH₂F₂.     

Isomerization of 1,2-diiodoethylene in a laser-induced chemical reaction of I2 + C2H2

A laser-induced chemical reaction of I₂ + C₂H₂ has been studied and the formation of cis and tians isomers of 1,2-diiodoethylene has been observed. The ratio of the two isomers of 1,2-diodoethylene changes markedly upon changing the laser wavelengths of excitation of the I₂ molecule
