Photonuclear interaction cross-sections from the GEANT4 database are approximated for all nuclei and all energies (from the hadron production threshold to about 40 TeV). The approximation methods in the giant-dipole resonance region, nucleon resonance region, and high-energy region are improved with respect to existing approximations. As an application of the approximation for photonuclear cross-sections, an improved method of calculating electronuclear cross-sections is developed. The interaction cross-section of virtual photons with nuclei at high Q2 are approximated and a simple algorithm for describing the electronuclear reactions, including high-Q2 scattering, is proposed. We study the elastic properties of single A/B random copolymer chains, with a specific sequence and use them as theoretical model for so called HP proteins. HP proteins carry hydrophilic (P) and hydrophobic (H) monomers. We predict a rich structure in the force-extension relations which can be attributed to the information in the sequence. The variational method is used to probe local minima on the path of stretching and releasing for the chain molecules. At a given force, we find multiple configurations which are separated by energy barriers. A collapsed globular configuration consists of several domains which unravel cooperatively. Upon stretching, the unfolding path shows a stepwise pattern corresponding to the unfolding of each domain. While releasing, several cores can be created simultaneously in the middle of the chain, resulting in a different path of collapse. The long-range interactions and stiffness of the chain simplify the potential landscape given by the disorder in sequence. We investigate the structure and dynamics of the interface between two immiscible liquids in a three-dimensional disordered porous medium. We apply a phase-field model that includes explicitly disorder and discuss both spontaneous and forced imbibition. The structure of the interface is dominated by a length scale ξ× which arises from liquid conservation. We further show that disorder in the capillary and permeability act on different length scales and give rise to different scalings and structures of the interface properties. We present Electron-Spin-Resonance experiments in the frequency range 35–420 GHz in magnetic fields up to 14 T and with temperatures down to 1.5 K. The quasi-onedimensionalS=1 Spin Systems NENP and NINO exhibit similar resonance-modes, which can be associated with transitions between excited states atq= and excitations from the groundstate. Groundstateexcitation can be explained with regard to a transverse staggered field due to inequivalent Ni2+-sites along the chains. Several features are discussed like polarisation-and temperature dependence of line-intensity and the angular and temperature-dependence of resonance-field.  相似文献

Stripes of rhodium metal were deposited by focusing an Ar+ laser (514.5 nm) onto glass and polyimide substrates in a heated vacuum cell that contained Rh(CO)2acac vapor. Stripes were characterized by scanning profilometry, electrical resistivity, SEM and Auger measurements. Most stripes were 100–200 m wide and 1–3 m high. Very broad stripes (>500 m) were deposited when the Rh(CO)2acac vapor pressure was greater than 1 Torr and when the laser power was more than 200 mW. Stripe resistivities were in general around 30 times that of the bulk material. Auger spectra show the presence of carbon in the stripes.  相似文献

Usual ferroelectric compounds undergo a paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition when the susceptibility of the electric polarization density changes its sign. The temperature is the only thermodynamic field that governs the phase transition. Chiral tilted smectics may also present an improper ferroelectricity when there is a tilt angle between the average long axis direction and the layer normal. The tilt angle is the order parameter of the phase transition which is governed by the temperature. Although the electric susceptibility remains positive, a polarization proportional to the tilt appears due to their linear coupling allowed by the chiral symmetry. Further complications come in when the chirality increases, as new phases are encountered with the same tilt inside the layers but a distribution of the azimuthal direction which is periodic with a unit cell of two (SmC(A)*, three (SmC(Fi1)*, four (SmC(Fi2)* or more (SmC(alpha)* layers. In most of these phases, the layer normal is a symmetry axis so there is no macroscopic polarization except for the SmC(Fi1)* in which the average long axis is tilted so the phase is ferrielectric. By studying a particular compound with only a SmC(Fi2)* and a SmC(alpha)* phase, we show that we recover the uniformly tilted ferroelectric SmC* when applying an electric field. We are thus led to build field-temperature phase diagrams for this class of compounds by combining different experimental techniques described here.  相似文献

The present work is focused on thermal diffusivity (D)(D) measurements, via Z  -scan experiment, in a discotic nematic phase of the lyotropic mixture comprised of potassium laurate, decanol and D2OD2O. In this experiment, the nematic sample is translated through the focal region of a focused Gaussian laser beam. The experimental data are analyzed according to the thermal lens model and the ratio between the thermal diffusivities parallel (D)(D) and perpendicular (D)(D) to the director of the nematic sample has been found to be smaller than one. The results are compared to others obtained with different liquid crystals and explained by using a simple model where this ratio is correlated to the shape anisotropy of the micelles.  相似文献

The depolarisation ratio for the Raman-active phenyl stretching mode has been measured over the whole of the mesophase range, and the orientational order parameters deduced, in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB). Linearly polarised light was incident normally on a homogeneously aligned sample and a χ2 minimisation routine performed on the 360° depolarisation ratio profile. The order parameters 〈P 200〉 and 〈P 400〉 , together with the differential polarisability ratio, r , are used as fitting parameters and measured as a function of temperature. Interestingly, we show that the value for r , conventionally measured in the isotropic phase and assumed to remain constant, has a clear temperature dependence, ranging from -0.032±0.008 in the isotropic phase through to -0.245±0.015 at the nematic-to-smectic A phase transition. The measured order parameters 〈P 200〉 and 〈P 400〉 varied from 0.35- 0.55±0.02 and 0.180- 0.245±0.02 , respectively, across the 8 ° C wide nematic phase range. The values of both 〈P 200〉 and 〈P 400〉 are in excellent agreement with theory, but it is noteworthy that 〈P 400〉 shows a much better quantitative match than has been reported in previous work. Crucially the temperature dependence of r is shown to be a contributing factor in the low 〈P 400〉 values that have been conventionally reported from Raman scattering measurements. The potential for fitting the entire angular depolarisation ratio distribution in liquid crystalline systems that are described by more order parameters, specifically biaxial materials, is discussed.  相似文献

The phase diagram is an interesting field of research, particularly in lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC). In this way, one of the most important phase diagrams of this LLC system was reported by Yu and Saupe. Two uniaxial (calamitic--N(C) and discotic--N(D)) and one biaxial nematic (N(B)) phases were determined by these authors. Furthermore, in this phase diagram the classical isotropic phase (I was observed at high temperature as well as a reentrant isotropic phase (I(RE)) which takes place at lower temperature. Later, this phase diagram was also studied by several authors and in all cases the I(RE)-N(C)-I phase transitions were not observed. In this work, we present a study of this phase diagram through digital image processing and refractometry optical techniques. The occurrence of these phase transitions is investigated and characterized. In addition, the order parameter is obtained based on the Vuks hypothesis from a particular point, in the range of the N(C) phase, where the absolute value of the optical birefringence (Deltan is maximum.  相似文献

We study both numerically and analytically what happens to a random graph of average connectivity α when its leaves and their neighbors are removed iteratively up to the point when no leaf remains. The remnant is made of isolated vertices plus an induced subgraph we call the core. In the thermodynamic limit of an infinite random graph, we compute analytically the dynamics of leaf removal, the number of isolated vertices and the number of vertices and edges in the core. We show that a second order phase transition occurs at α = e = 2.718 ... : below the transition, the core is small but above the transition, it occupies a finite fraction of the initial graph. The finite size scaling properties are then studied numerically in detail in the critical region, and we propose a consistent set of critical exponents, which does not coincide with the set of standard percolation exponents for this model. We clarify several aspects in combinatorial optimization and spectral properties of the adjacency matrix of random graphs. Received 31 January 2001 and Received in final form 26 June 2001  相似文献
