Spectral estimates for saddle point matrices arising in weak constraint four‐dimensional variational data assimilation

We consider the large sparse symmetric linear systems of equations that arise in the solution of weak constraint four‐dimensional variational data assimilation, a method of high interest for numerical weather prediction. These systems can be written as saddle point systems with a 3 × 3 block structure but block eliminations can be performed to reduce them to saddle point systems with a 2 × 2 block structure, or further to symmetric positive definite systems. In this article, we analyse how sensitive the spectra of these matrices are to the number of observations of the underlying dynamical system. We also obtain bounds on the eigenvalues of the matrices. Numerical experiments are used to confirm the theoretical analysis and bounds.     

Efficient Collocation Schemes for Singular Boundary Value Problems

We discuss an error estimation procedure for the global error of collocation schemes applied to solve singular boundary value problems with a singularity of the first kind. This a posteriori estimate of the global error was proposed by Stetter in 1978 and is based on the idea of Defect Correction, originally due to Zadunaisky. Here, we present a new, carefully designed modification of this error estimate which not only results in less computational work but also appears to perform satisfactorily for singular problems. We give a full analytical justification for the asymptotical correctness of the error estimate when it is applied to a general nonlinear regular problem. For the singular case, we are presently only able to provide computational evidence for the full convergence order, the related analysis is still work in progress. This global estimate is the basis for a grid selection routine in which the grid is modified with the aim to equidistribute the global error. This procedure yields meshes suitable for an efficient numerical solution. Most importantly, we observe that the grid is refined in a way reflecting only the behavior of the solution and remains unaffected by the unsmooth direction field close to the singular point.     

FORMATION OF SINGULARITIES FOR A KIND OF QUASILINEAR NON－STRICTLY HYPERBOLIC SYSTEM

The author gets a blow-up result of C1 solution to the Cauchy problem for a first order quasilinear non-strictly hyperbolic system in one space dimension.

本文利用Kothe函数空间的性质以及Kothe函数空间与Kothe-Bochner空间的关系,讨论了Kothe-Bochner空间E(X)的凸性,主要结果如下: (a)给出E(X)的端点的充分条件,得到了E(X)严格凸的判据,相应地推广了Lp(μ,X) 以及Lφ(X)的结果; (b)讨论了E(X)的弱局部一致凸和局部完全k-凸; (c)刻画了E(X)的强凸,给出了F(X)强凸的充要条件．     

On one generalization of a DiPerna and Majda theorem

The weak limits of sequences {f(u^ν)}_ν∈? where u^ν's are vector‐valued µ‐measurable functions defined on a compact set Ω and f is (possibly) discontinuous are investigated. As shown by the author (J. Conv. Anal. (to appear)), they are described in terms of integral formulae involving parametrized measures independent of f, similarly as in the classical theorem by Young and its generalization due to DiPerna and Majda. High energy asymptotics of the scattering amplitude for the Schrödinger equation

We find an explicit function approximating at high energies the kernel of the scattering matrix with arbitrary accuracy. Moreover, the same function gives all diagonal singularities of the kernel of the scattering matrix in the angular variables. On fixed point and almost fixed point problems of lower semicontinuous type multivalued mappings

In the present paper, some new almost fixed point theorems and fixed point theorems for lower semicontinuous type multivalued mappings are obtained in metrizable H-spaces.
