Multimode optical fiber demultiplexer-star coupler using a single gradient-index-rod lens and a multi-facet grating

An optical fiber multi-function device consisting of a single gradient-index-rod lens and a multi-facet blazed reflection grating is proposed to simultaneously realize functions of wavelength demultiplexing and optical signal distribution in a multimode optical fiber transmission system. We analyzed the demultiplexing characteristics and the tolerance of optical components using the ray trace method. This device can realize not only low loss optical signal distribution but also offers improved demultiplexing characteristics in comparison with the previously proposed demultiplexer-multiposition switch. The following characteristics are expected from the design using commercially available optical components: a working band of 0.64–0.88 μm, channel separation of 34–36 nm, 3 dB bandwidth of 27–28 nm, channel cross-talk of less than - 40 dB and minimum excess insertion loss of 0.9–2.1 dB.     

On upper and lower D*-supercontinuous multifunctions

We define a multifunction F: X ⇝ Y to be upper (lower) D*-supercontinuous if F ⁺(V) (F ⁻(V)) is d*-open in X for every open set V of Y. We obtain some characterizations and several properties concerning upper (lower) D*-supercontinuous multifunctions.      

Second Order Nonlinear Evolution Inclusions Ⅰ： Existence and Relaxation Results

This is the first part of a work on second order nonlinear, nonmonotone evolution inclusions defined in the framework of an evolution triple of spaces and with a multivalued nonlinearity depending on both x（t） and x（t）. In this first part we prove existence and relaxation theorems. We consider the case of an usc, convex valued nonlinearity and we show that for this problem the solution set is nonempty and compact in C^1 （T, H）. Also we examine the Isc, nonconvex case and again we prove the existence of solutions. In addition we establish the existence of extremal solutions and by strengthening our hypotheses, we show that the extremal solutions are dense in C^1 （T, H） to the solutions of the original convex problem （strong relaxation）. An example of a nonlinear hyperbolic optimal control problem is also discussed.     

Global error bound for convex inclusion problems

The existence of global error bound for convex inclusion problems is discussed in this paper, including pointwise global error bound and uniform global error bound. The existence of uniform global error bound has been carefully studied in Burke and Tseng (SIAM J. Optim. 6(2), 265–282, 1996) which unifies and extends many existing results. Our results on the uniform global error bound (see Theorem 3.2) generalize Theorem 9 in Burke and Tseng (1996) by weakening the constraint qualification and by widening the varying range of the parameter. As an application, the existence of global error bound for convex multifunctions is also discussed.     

The solution existence of general variational inclusion problems

We propose general variational inclusion problems which are slightly different from corresponding problems considered in several recent papers in the literature and show that they are advantageous. Sufficient conditions for the solution existence are established. As applications we derive consequences for several special cases of variational inclusion problems, quasioptimization problems, equilibrium problems and implicit variational inequalities and show that they improve the results of some recent existing papers.     

Contractive multifunctions, fixed point inclusions and iterated multifunction systems

We study the properties of multifunction operators that are contractive in the Covitz-Nadler sense. In this situation, such operators T possess fixed points satisfying the relation x∈Tx. We introduce an iterative method involving projections that guarantees convergence from any starting point x₀∈X to a point x∈XT, the set of all fixed points of a multifunction operator T. We also prove a continuity result for fixed point sets XT as well as a “generalized collage theorem” for contractive multifunctions. These results can then be used to solve inverse problems involving contractive multifunctions. Two applications of contractive multifunctions are introduced: (i) integral inclusions and (ii) iterated multifunction systems.

Continuity properties of the normal cone to the level sets of a quasiconvex function

Two main properties of the subgradient mapping of convex functions are transposed for quasiconvex ones. The continuity of the functionxf(x)^–1f(x) on the domain where it is defined is deduced from some continuity properties of the normal coneN to the level sets of the quasiconvex functionf. We also prove that, under a pseudoconvexity-type condition, the normal coneN(x) to the set {x:f(x)f(x)} can be expressed as the convex hull of the limits of type {N(x _n)}, where {x _n} is a sequence converging tox and contained in a dense subsetD. In particular, whenf is pseudoconvex,D can be taken equal to the set of points wheref is differentiable.This research was completed while the second author was on a sabbatical leave at the University of Montreal and was supported by a NSERC grant. Preparation and Characterization of Nano-ZnFe2O4/TiO2 Films

The nano-ZnFe2O4/TiO2 films possess the functions of desulfurization and degradation for organic pollutants. The sols of ZnFe2O4/TiO2 were prepared by sol-gel method and coated on glass and porous ceramic by vertical coating and dipping-lift processes, respectively, and the samples were obtained after drying and sintering. The composition, appearance, absorption spectrum of the films, and the influence of the film on porous ceramic performances were analyzed using SEM, AFM, UV-Vis spectrometer, and mercury porosimeter, respectively, to determine the operation parameters of the multifunction porous ceramic elements for gas-purification.     

Stability of multistage stochastic programming

In this paper, we study the stability of multistage stochastic programming with recourse in a way that is different from that used in studying stability of two-stage stochastic programs. Here, we transform the multistage programs into mathematical programs in the space ⁿ ×L _p with a simple objective function and multistage stochastic constraints. By investigating the continuity of the multistage multifunction defined by the multistage stochastic constraints and applying epi-convergence theory we obtain stability results for linear and linear-quadratic multistage stochastic programs.Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
