We study the relationship between the dynamical complexity of optimal paths and the discount factor in general infinite-horizon discrete-time concave problems. Given a dynamic systemx

For any fixed discount factor 0 < < *, the dynamic system is the solution to some concave problem. For any discount factor ** < < 1, the dynamic system is not the solution to any strongly concave problem. We prove that the upper bound ** is a decreasing function of the topological entropy of the dynamic system. Recently Dekker and Hordijk [3,4] introduced conditions for the existence of deterministic Blackwell optimal policies in denumerable Markov decision chains with unbounded rewards. These conditions include- uniform geometric recurrence.The-uniform geometric recurrence property also implies the existence of average optimal policies, a solution to the average optimality equation with explicit formula's and convergence of the value iteration algorithm for average rewards. For this reason, the verification of-uniform geometric convergence is also useful in cases where average and-discounted rewards are considered.On the other hand,-uniform geometric recurrence is a heavy condition on the Markov decision chain structure for negative dynamic programming problems. The verification of-uniform geometric recurrence for the Markov chain induced by some deterministic policy together with results by Sennott [14] yields the existence of a deterministic policy that minimizes the expected average cost for non-negative immediate cost functions.In this paper-uniform geometric recurrence will be proved for two queueing models: theK competing queues and the two centre open Jackson network with control of the service rates.The research of the author is supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research N.W.O. 相似文献

In anM/M/1 queueing model, a decision maker can choosem pairs of arrival- and service rates. He can change his action at any time epoch, a switch of action costs an amount depending on the size of the switch. Besides that there are continuously incurring costs. Over a finite time horizon, there exists an optimal monotone hysteretic Markov policy. This is shown essentially by the technique of time discretization.The work producing this article was done during a half year stay at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, with Prof. Arie Hordijk. A technical report (a more detailled version of this article) was written there [6]. ABSTRACTWe provide an asymptotic analysis of multi-objective sequential stochastic assignment problems (MOSSAP). In MOSSAP, a fixed number of tasks arrive sequentially, with an n-dimensional value vector revealed upon arrival. Each task is assigned to one of a group of known workers immediately upon arrival, with the reward given by an n-dimensional product-form vector. The objective is to maximize each component of the expected reward vector. We provide expressions for the asymptotic expected reward per task for each component of the reward vector and compare the convergence rates for three classes of Pareto optimal policies. 相似文献

A phenolic copolymer has been grafted with oligomers of different chain lengths. Polymer-polymer complexation has been studied between graft copolymers and nonionic polymers, such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone) and poly(ethylene oxide), in an acetone-methanol mixture by several methods, e.g., viscosity, conductance, and apparent pH measurements. A distinct stepwise complexation between PVP and graft copolymers has been observed. The length of the side chain also seemed to influence interpolymer complex formation. In this paper, we consider a stochastic control problem on a finite time horizon. The unit price of capital obeys a logarithmic Brownian motion, and the income from production is also subject to the random Brownian fluctuations. The goal is to choose optimal investment and consumption policies to maximize the finite horizon expected discounted hyperbolic absolute risk aversion utility of consumption. A dynamic programming principle is used to derive a time‐dependent Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation. The Leray–Schauder fixed point theorem is used to obtain existence of solution of the HJB equation. At last, we derive the optimal investment and consumption policies by the verification theorem. We study a processing system comprised of parallel queues, whose individual service rates are specified by a global service mode (configuration). The issue is how to switch the system between various possible service modes, so as to maximize its throughput and maintain stability under the most workload-intensive input traffic traces (arrival processes). Stability preserves the job inflow–outflow balance at each queue on the traffic traces. Two key families of service policies are shown to maximize throughput, under the mild condition that traffic traces have long-term average workload rates. In the first family of cone policies, the service mode is chosen based on the system backlog state belonging to a corresponding cone. Two distinct policy classes of that nature are investigated, MaxProduct and FastEmpty. In the second family of batch policies (BatchAdapt), jobs are collectively scheduled over adaptively chosen horizons, according to an asymptotically optimal, robust schedule. The issues of nonpreemptive job processing and non-negligible switching times between service modes are addressed. The analysis is extended to cover feed-forward networks of such processing systems/nodes. The approach taken unifies and generalizes prior studies, by developing a general trace-based modeling framework (sample-path approach) for addressing the queueing stability problem. It treats the queueing structure as a deterministic dynamical system and analyzes directly its evolution trajectories. It does not require any probabilistic superstructure, which is typically used in previous approaches. Probability can be superposed later to address finer performance questions (e.g., delay). The throughput maximization problem is seen to be primarily of structural nature. The developed methodology appears to have broader applicability to other queueing systems. 相似文献

This paper studies denumerable state continuous-time controlled Markov chains with the discounted reward criterion and a Borel action space. The reward and transition rates are unbounded, and the reward rates are allowed to take positive or negative values. First, we present new conditions for a nonhomogeneous Q(t)-process to be regular. Then, using these conditions, we give a new set of mild hypotheses that ensure the existence of -optimal (0) stationary policies. We also present a martingale characterization of an optimal stationary policy. Our results are illustrated with controlled birth and death processes. 相似文献
