An algorithm for the divisors of monic polynomials over a commutative ring

Gilmer and Heinzer proved that given a reduced ring R, a polynomial f divides a monic polynomial in R[X] if and only if there exists a direct sum decomposition of R = R₀ ⊕ … ⊕ R_m (m ≤ deg f), associated to a fundamental system of idempotents e₀, … , e_m, such that the component of f in each R_i[X] has degree coefficient which is a unit of R_i. We propose to give an algorithm to explicitly find such a decomposition. Moreover, we extend this result to divisors of doubly monic Laurent polynomials.

Novel solvable many-body problems

Novel classes of dynamical systems are introduced, including many-body problems characterized by nonlinear equations of motion of Newtonian type (“acceleration equals forces”) which determine the motion of points in the complex plane. These models are solvable, namely their con?guration at any time can be obtained from the initial data by algebraic operations, amounting to the determination of the zeros of a known time-dependent polynomial in the independent variable z. Some of these models are multiply periodic, isochronous or asymptotically isochronous; others display scattering phenomena.

On the Polynomials of A. O. Gelfond Having Minimal Deviation from Zero together with Their Derivatives

Some results of A.O. Gelfond concerning monic polynomials of least deviation (uniform) from zero together with their derivatives are extended to certain L_p - norms and to several variables. As an application we extend a recent result of Xiaoming Huang to functions f∈C(n)n)([?1, 1]) which satisfy f⁽ⁿ⁾(x)≥1.     

A note on the interlacing of zeros and orthogonality

Let be a sequence of monic polynomials with deg(t_n)=n such that, for each n∈N, the zeros of t_n are real and simple and t_n and t_n+1 have no common zeros. We discuss the connection between the orthogonality of the sequence, the positivity of a certain ratio, and the interlacing of the zeros of t_n and t_n+1 for n≥1, n∈N.     

The monic integer transfinite diameter

We study the problem of finding nonconstant monic integer polynomials, normalized by their degree, with small supremum on an interval . The monic integer transfinite diameter is defined as the infimum of all such supremums. We show that if has length , then .

We make three general conjectures relating to the value of for intervals of length less than . We also conjecture a value for where . We give some partial results, as well as computational evidence, to support these conjectures.

We define functions and , which measure properties of the lengths of intervals with on either side of . Upper and lower bounds are given for these functions.

We also consider the problem of determining when is a Farey interval. We prove that a conjecture of Borwein, Pinner and Pritsker concerning this value is true for an infinite family of Farey intervals.

Rational Functions and Association Scheme Parameters

The parameters of metric, cometric, symmetric association schemes with q ± 1 (the same as the parameters of the underlying orthogonal polynomials) can be given in general by evaluating a single rational function of degree (4, 4) in the complex variable q ^j. But in all known examples, save the simple n-gons, these reduce to polynomials of degree at most 2 in q ^j with q an integer. One reason this occurs is that the rational function can have singularities at points which would determine some of the parameters. This paper deals with the case in which not all of the singularities are removable, thus giving some reason why the n-gons might naturally be the only exceptions to schemes with parameters being polynomials of degree at most 2 in q ^j , except possibly for schemes of very small diameter.
