Locally Periodic Versus Globally Periodic Infinite Words

We call a one-way infinite word w over a finite alphabet (ρ,l)-repetitive if all long enough prefixes of w contain as a suffix a ρth power (or more generally a repetition of order ρ) of a word of length at most l. We show that each (2,4)-repetitive word is ultimately periodic, as well as that there exist continuum many, and hence also nonultimately periodic, (2,5)-repetitive words. Further, we characterize nonultimately periodic (2,5)-repetitive words both structurally and algebraically.     

Moments of an exponential functional of random walks and permutations with given descent sets

The exponential functional of simple, symmetric random walks with negative drift is an infinite polynomial Y = 1 + ξ₁ + ξ₁ξ₂ + ξ₁ξ₂ξ₃ + ⋯ of independent and identically distributed non-negative random variables. It has moments that are rational functions of the variables μ _k = E(ξ ^k ) < 1 with universal coefficients. It turns out that such a coefficient is equal to the number of permutations with descent set defined by the multiindex of the coefficient. A recursion enumerates all numbers of permutations with given descent sets in the form of a Pascal-type triangle. CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS WITH DIRICHLET BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR PERTURBED SECOND-ORDER DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS ON A HALF-LINE

Dirichlet boundary value problems for perturbed second-order differential equations on a half line are investigated in this paper. The methods mainly depend on the calculus of variations to the classical functionals. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of the solutions.     

Selection Principles and Sierpinski Sets

We show that a set of real numbers is a Sierpinski set if, and only if, it satisfies a selection property similar to the familiar Menger property.
