Marcus contextual languages consisting of primitive words

In this paper we prove that the language of all primitive (strongly primitive) words over a nontrivial alphabet can be generated by certain types of Marcus contextual grammars.     

Middle-school students’ concept images of geometric translations

This study explored sixth grade students’ concept images of geometric translations and the possible sources of their conceptions in a non-technological environment. The data were gathered through a written instrument, student and teacher interviews and document analyses. Analyses of student responses revealed two major concept images of geometric translations: (a) translation as translational motion, and (b) translation as both translational and rotational motion. Students who held these conceptions showed various levels of understanding, such as conceiving translations as undefined motion, partially-defined motion, and defined-motion of a single geometric figure on the plane. The findings of the study suggested, in general, consistencies between students’ concept images and their concept definitions. However, most of the students’ concept definitions were inconsistent with the formal concept definition of geometric translations.Data analyses also revealed five interpretations of a translation vector: (a) vector as a reference line, (b) vector as a symmetry line, (c) vector as a direction indicator, (d) vector as a parameter, and (e) vector as an abstract tool. Furthermore, classroom instruction, mathematics and science textbooks, real-life examples and everyday language were the major sources of students’ concept images of geometric translations.     

Three types of mathematical representational translations: Comparing empirical and theoretical results

Previous research has investigated the representational translation practices of high school students, high school teachers, and college preservice teachers in various mathematical contexts including linear functions. Findings from qualitative research has frequently led to new notions about participant work and understanding. Many quantitative research has investigated the degree to which some in these populations correctly perform these translations. However, it seems that only infrequently have empirical research investigated findings from qualitative studies and vice versa, and findings regarding one population are rarely compared with findings of another population. This study (a) empirically explores the frequency of success of preservice teachers (N = 80) regarding representational translations in the context of linear functions, (b) quantifies results from previous qualitative, literature‐based research regarding high school students and teachers, and (c) quantitatively compares the results. This study demonstrates that some mathematical representational translations are more difficult than others.

On the Positivity of the Stochastic Heat Equation

We study the positivity preserving properties of the heat equation with a white noise potential and random initial condition. Moreover, we find a generalized Feynman--Kac formula for the solution of the problem using methods from the white noise analysis. The initial condition can anticipate the driving white noise. We show that the solution is positive, when the random initial condition is positive. For the case of a time-dependent white noise potential, we give a special representation of the solution together with regularity results.     

Off-diagonal long-range order and meissner effect for lattice systems

We study some general properties of a strongly correlated electron system defined on a lattice. Assuming that the system exhibits off-diagonal long-range order, we show that this assumption implies the Meissner effect. This extends to lattice systems previous results obtained for the continuous case.     

Categorical Abstract Algebraic Logic: Subdirect Representation of Pofunctors

Pa?asińska and Pigozzi developed a theory of partially ordered varieties and quasi-varieties of algebras with the goal of addressing issues pertaining to the theory of algebraizability of logics involving an abstract form of the connective of logical implication. Following their lead, the author has abstracted the theory to cover the case of algebraic systems, systems that replace algebras in the theory of categorical abstract algebraic logic. In this note, an order subdirect representation theorem for partially ordered algebraic systems is proven. This is an analog of the Order Subdirect Representation Theorem of Pa?asińska and Pigozzi, which, in turn, generalizes the well-known Subdirect Representation Theorem of Universal Algebra.
