Biological systems, from cells to organisms, must respond to the ever-changing environment in order to survive and function. This is not a simple task given the often random nature of the signals they receive, as well as the intrinsically stochastic, many-body and often self-organized nature of the processes that control their sensing and response and limited resources. Despite a wide range of scales and functions that can be observed in the living world, some common principles that govern the behavior of biological systems emerge. Here I review two examples of very different biological problems: information transmission in gene regulatory networks and diversity of adaptive immune receptor repertoires that protect us from pathogens. I discuss the trade-offs that physical laws impose on these systems and show that the optimal designs of both immune repertoires and gene regulatory networks display similar discrete tiling structures. These solutions rely on locally non-overlapping placements of the responding elements (genes and receptors) that, overall, cover space nearly uniformly.  相似文献

Let S   be a bounded, Riemann measurable set in RdRd, and Λ be a lattice. By a theorem of Fuglede, if S   tiles RdRd with translation set Λ, then S has an orthogonal basis of exponentials. We show that, under the more general condition that S multi-tiles  RdRd with translation set Λ, S has a Riesz basis of exponentials. The proof is based on Meyer?s quasicrystals.  相似文献

Any full rank perfect 1-error correcting binary code of length n=2k-1 and with a kernel of dimension n-log(n+1)-m, where m is sufficiently large, may be used to construct a full rank perfect 1-error correcting binary code of length 2m-1 and with a kernel of dimension n-log(n+1)-k. Especially we may construct full rank perfect 1-error correcting binary codes of length n=2m-1 and with a kernel of dimension n-log(n+1)-4 for m=6,7,…,10.This result extends known results on the possibilities for the size of a kernel of a full rank perfect code.  相似文献

In this paper we study spectral sets which are unions of finitely many intervals in R. We show that any spectrum associated with such a spectral set Ω is periodic, with the period an integral multiple of the measure of Ω. As a consequence we get a structure theorem for such spectral sets and observe that the generic case is that of the equal interval case.  相似文献

It has been established that preservice elementary school teachers (PSTs) often employ procedural methods when solving measurement problems without conceptual understanding or flexibility, but a significant gap exists in the literature identifying why. Through the lens of discrete and continuous interpretations of area, this study extends the research base by describing strategies PSTs use to tile a two-dimensional space with varying size tiles and what these strategies imply about PSTs’ conceptions of area measurement. These strategies and implied conceptions enable further discussion on the multiple purposes of the area model as an illustrative measure for mathematics throughout the elementary school curriculum.  相似文献

Let a normed space X possess a tiling T consisting of unit balls. We show that any packing P of X obtained by a small perturbation of T is completely translatively saturated; that is, one cannot replace finitely many elements of P by a larger number of unit balls such that the resulting arrangement is still a packing.In contrast with that, given a tiling T of Rn with images of a convex body C under Euclidean isometries, there may exist packings P consisting of isometric images of C obtained from T by arbitrarily small perturbations which are no longer completely saturated. This means that there exists some positive integer k such that one can replace k−1 members of P by k isometric copies of C without violating the packing property. However, we quantify a tradeoff between the size of the perturbation and the minimal k such that the above phenomenon occurs.Analogous results are obtained for coverings.  相似文献

A packing (resp. covering) ? of a normed space X consisting of unit balls is called completely saturated (resp. completely reduced) if no finite set of its members can be replaced by a more numerous (resp. less numerous) set of unit balls of X without losing the packing property (resp. covering property) of ?. We show that a normed space X admits completely saturated packings with disjoint closed unit balls as well as completely reduced coverings with open unit balls, provided that there exists a tiling of X with unit balls. Completely reduced coverings by open balls are of interest in the context of an approximation theory for continuous real‐valued functions that rests on so‐called controllable coverings of compact metric spaces. The close relation between controllable coverings and completely reduced coverings allows an extension of the approximation theory to non‐compact spaces. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
