Extensions of Modules over Schur Algebras, Symmetric Groups and Hecke Algebras

We study the relation between the cohomology of general linear and symmetric groups and their respective quantizations, using Schur algebras and standard homological techniques to build appropriate spectral sequences. As our methods fit inside a much more general context within the theory of finite-dimensional algebras, we develop our results first in that general setting, and then specialize to the above situations. From this we obtain new proofs of several known results in modular representation theory of symmetric groups. Moreover, we reduce certain questions about computing extensions for symmetric groups and Hecke algebras to questions about extensions for general linear groups and their quantizations.     

Gauss Algebras

A special class of associative algebras is introduced and studied. A criteria of semisimplicity for suitable category of modules is obtained.     

A constructive characterization of the split closure of a mixed integer linear program

Two independent proofs of the polyhedrality of the split closure of mixed integer linear program have been previously presented. Unfortunately neither of these proofs is constructive. In this paper, we present a constructive version of this proof. We also show that split cuts dominate a family of inequalities introduced by Köppe and Weismantel.

On co-semihereditary rings

A ringR is left co-semihereditary (strongly left co-semihereditary) if every finitely cogenerated factor of a finitely cogenerated (arbitrary) injective leftR-module is injective. A left co-semihereditary ring, which is not strongly left co-semihereditary, is given to answer a question of Miller and Tumidge in the negative. If _R U _S defines a Morita duality,R is proved to be left co-semihereditary (left semihereditmy) if and only ifS is right semihereditary (right co-semihereditary). Assuming thatS⩾R is an almost excellent extension,S is shown to be (strongly) right co-semihereditary if and only ifR is (strongly) right co-semihereditary. A Bitangential Interpolation Problem on the Closed Unit Ball for Multipliers of the Arveson Space

We solve a bitangential interpolation problem for contractive multipliers on the Arveson space with an arbitrary interpolating set in the closed unit ball . The solvability criterion is established in terms of positive kernels. The set of all solutions is parametrized by a Redheffer transform. Submitted: February 2, 2002.     

Central quotients of biautomatic groups

The quotient of a biautomatic group by a subgroup of the center is shown to be biautomatic. The main tool used is the Neumann-Shapiro triangulation of S ^n-1, associated to a biautomatic structure on . Among other applications, a question of Gersten and Short is settled by showing that direct factors of biautomatic groups are biautomatic. Received: October 4, 1994     

Sample evaporation in conventional GC split/splitless injectors. Part 1: Some quantitative estimates concerning heat consumption during evaporation

During sample evaporation in conventional vaporizing injection, the supply of heat to the evaporating liquid is a problem, first because the amounts of heat consumed are relatively large and, secondly, because the heat must be transferred to the sample within a very short time. Times available for evaporation, required amounts of heat, possible sources of heat, and the time required to transfer the heat to the sample liquid are discussed. It is shown that mixing with carrier gas contributes little heat to the evaporation process, but also that packings with glass wool have too low a heat capacity to deliver the required amount of heat to the evaporating sample. Transfer of heat from the insert wall to the sample easily requires several seconds, even if cooling of the vaporizing zone by 20° is accepted. Thus “flash evaporation” is usually impossible and most liquids must be held in the vaporizing chamber to allow full evaporation.     

On the structure of split Leibniz triple systems

We study the structure of arbitrary split Leibniz triple systems with a coherent 0-root space. By developing techniques of connections of roots for this kind of triple systems, under certain conditions, in the case of T being of maximal length, the simplicity of the Leibniz triple systems is characterized.     

Fundamental Groups of Graphs of Cyclic Subgroup Separable and Weakly Potent Groups

We give a characterization of the cyclic subgroup separability and weak potency of the fundamental group of a graph of polycyclic-by-finite groups and free-by-finite groups amalgamating edge subgroups of the form × D,where h has infinite order and D is finite.
