Two classes of piecewise-linear difference equations with eventual periodicity three

In this paper, we will study two classes of difference equations which are piecewise-linear and of similar forms. We will show that all nontrivial solutions of one equation are eventually periodic with prime period three. We will show this result for one case of the second equation.     

A recursive-faulting model of distributed damage in confined brittle materials

We develop a model of distributed damage in brittle materials deforming in triaxial compression based on the explicit construction of special microstructures obtained by recursive faulting. The model aims to predict the effective or macroscopic behavior of the material from its elastic and fracture properties; and to predict the microstructures underlying the microscopic behavior. The model accounts for the elasticity of the matrix, fault nucleation and the cohesive and frictional behavior of the faults. We analyze the resulting quasistatic boundary value problem and determine the relaxation of the potential energy, which describes the macroscopic material behavior averaged over all possible fine-scale structures. Finally, we present numerical calculations of the dynamic multi-axial compression experiments on sintered aluminum nitride of Chen and Ravichandran [1994. The model correctly predicts the general trends regarding the observed damage patterns; and the brittle-to-ductile transition resulting under increasing confinement.

There is a recursive set of natural numbers which is the difference set of some recursively enumerable set but which is not the difference set of any recursive set.     

Design of recursive least-squares fixed-lag smoother using covariance information in linear continuous stochastic systems

This paper newly designs the recursive least-squares (RLS) fixed-lag smoother and filter using the covariance information in linear continuous-time stochastic systems. It is assumed that the signal is observed with additive white observation noise and the signal is uncorrelated with the observation noise. The estimators require the covariance information of the signal and the variance of the observation noise. The auto-covariance function of the signal is expressed in the semi-degenerate kernel form.     

An RQP algorithm using a differentiable exact penalty function for inequality constrained problems

In this paper we propose a recursive quadratic programming algorithm for nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints that uses as merit function a differentiable exact penalty function. The algorithm incorporates an automatic adjustment rule for the selection of the penalty parameter and makes use of an Armijo-type line search procedure that avoids the need to evaluate second order derivatives of the problem functions. We prove that the algorithm possesses global and superlinear convergence properties. Numerical results are reported.

Homogeneity of variance and correlation coefficients is one of assumptions in the analysis of longitudinal data.However, the assumption can be challenged. In this paper, we mainly propose and analyze nonlinear mixed effects models for longitudinal data with exponential correlation covariance structure, intend to introduce Huber's function in the log likelihood function and get robust estimation (M-estimation) by Fisher scoring method. Score test statistics for homogeneity of variance and correlation coefficient based on M-estimation are then studied. A simulation study is carried to assess the performance of test statistics and the method we proposed in the paper is illustrated by an actual data example.     

Density of the Medvedev lattice of Π<Superscript>0</Superscript><Subscript>1</Subscript> classes

The partial ordering of Medvedev reducibility restricted to the family of ⁰₁ classes is shown to be dense. For two disjoint computably enumerable sets, the class of separating sets is an important example of a ⁰₁ class, which we call a ``c.e. separating class'. We show that there are no non-trivial meets for c.e. separating classes, but that the density theorem holds in the sublattice generated by the c.e. separating classes.
