A note on strongly π-regular rings

Let R be an associative ring with unit and let N(R) denote the set of nilpotent elements of R. R is said to be stronglyπ-regular if for each x∈R, there exist a positive integer n and an element y∈R such that x ⁿ=x ^{n +1} y and xy=yx. R is said to be periodic if for each x∈R there are integers m,n≥ 1 such that m≠n and x ^m=x ⁿ. Assume that the idempotents in R are central. It is shown in this paper that R is a strongly π-regular ring if and only if N(R) coincides with the Jacobson radical of R and R/N(R) is regular. Some similar conditions for periodic rings are also obtained. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Idempotency of Extensions via the Bicompletion

Let Top ₀ be the category of topological T ₀-spaces, QU ₀ the category of quasi-uniform T ₀-spaces, T : QU ₀ → Top ₀ the usual forgetful functor and K : QU ₀ → QU ₀ the bicompletion reflector with unit k : 1 → K. Any T-section F : Top ₀ → QU ₀ is called K-true if KF = FTKF, and upper (lower) K-true if KF is finer (coarser) than FTKF. The literature considers important T-sections F that enjoy all three, or just one, or none of these properties. It is known that T(K,k)F is well-pointed if and only if F is upper K-true. We prove the surprising fact that T(K,k)F is the reflection to Fix(TkF) whenever it is idempotent. We also prove a new characterization of upper K-trueness. We construct examples to set apart some natural cases. In particular we present an upper K-true F for which T(K,k)F is not idempotent, and a K-true F for which the coarsest associated T-preserving coreflector in QU ₀ is not stable under K. We dedicate this paper to the memory of Sérgio de Ornelas Salbany (1941–2005).     

Equivalence of u–p and ζ–ψ formulations of the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations

This paper deals with the non-stationary incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for two-dimensional flows expressed in terms of the velocity and pressure and of the vorticity and streamfunction. The equivalence of the two formulations is demonstrated, both formally and rigorously, by virtue of a condition of compatibility between the boundary and initial values of the normal component of velocity. This condition is shown to be the only compatibility condition necessary to allow for solutions of a minimal regularity, namely H¹ for the velocity, as in most current numerical schemes relying on spatial discretizations of local type.

Nilpotency of Connes'' periodicity operator and the idempotent conjectures

For certain classes of discrete groups we verify the idempotent conjectures for various group algebras by the method of cyclic cohomology. A primitive-variable Riemann method for solution of the shallow water equations with wetting and drying

A Riemann flux that uses primitive variables rather than conserved variables is developed for the shallow water equations with nonuniform bathymetry. This primitive-variable flux is both conservative and well behaved at zero depth. The unstructured finite-volume discretization used is suitable for highly nonuniform grids that provide resolution of complex geometries and localized flow structures. A source-term discretization is derived for nonuniform bottom that balances the discrete flux integral both for still water and in dry regions. This primitive-variable formulation is uniformly valid in wet and dry regions with embedded wetting and drying fronts. A fully nonlinear implicit scheme and both nonlinear and time-linearized explicit schemes are developed for the time integration. The implicit scheme is solved by a parallel Newton-iterative algorithm with numerically computed flux Jacobians. A concise treatment of characteristic-variable boundary conditions with source terms is also given. Computed results obtained for the one-dimensional dam break on wet and dry beds and for normal-mode oscillations in a circular parabolic basin are in very close agreement with the analytical solutions. Other results for a forced breaking wave with friction interacting with a sloped bottom demonstrate a complex wave motion with wetting, drying and multiple interacting wave fronts. Finally, a highly nonuniform, coastline-conforming unstructured grid is used to demonstrate an unsteady simulation that models an artificial coastal flooding due to a forced wave entering the Gulf of Mexico.

On idempotents of a class of commutative rings

Abstract

In the present work, a procedure for determining idempotents of a commutative ring having a sequence of ideals with certain properties is presented. As an application of this procedure, idempotent elements of various commutative rings are determined. Several examples are included illustrating the main results.
