Highly accurate calculation of radial spheroidal functions

A new method for calculating the radial spheroidal functions of the first kind is proposed for the arguments that are greater than unity in modulus. A well-known representation of these functions is refined and used for this purpose. The constructs and the software implementation proposed in the paper provide an efficient tool for the calculation of the functions with a desired accuracy in a wide range of parameters.     

Equilibrium Problems with Applications to Eigenvalue Problems

In this paper, we consider equilibrium problems and introduce the concept of (S)₊ condition for bifunctions. Existence results for equilibrium problems with the (S)₊ condition are derived. As special cases, we obtain several existence results for the generalized nonlinear variational inequality studied by Ding and Tarafdar (Ref. 1) and the generalized variational inequality studied by Cubiotti and Yao (Ref. 2). Finally, applications to a class of eigenvalue problems are given.     

Line graphs of bipartite graphs with Hamiltonian paths

It is shown that, if t is an integer ≥3 and not equal to 7 or 8, then there is a unique maximal graph having the path P_t as a star complement for the eigenvalue ?2. The maximal graph is the line graph of K_m,m if t = 2m?1, and of K_m,m+1 if t = 2m. This result yields a characterization of L(G ) when G is a (t + 1)‐vertex bipartite graph with a Hamiltonian path. Sufficient conditions of non‐uniqueness for the Coulomb friction problem

We consider the Signorini problem with Coulomb friction in elasticity. Sufficient conditions of non‐uniqueness are obtained for the continuous model. These conditions are linked to the existence of real eigenvalues of an operator in a Hilbert space. We prove that, under appropriate conditions, real eigenvalues exist for a non‐local Coulomb friction model. Bounds for the Least Laplacian Eigenvalue of a Signed Graph

A signed graph is a graph with a sign attached to each edge. This paper extends some fundamental concepts of the Laplacian matrices from graphs to signed graphs. In particular, the relationships between the least Laplacian eigenvalue and the unbalancedness of a signed graph are investigated.

In this paper we provide new necessary and sufficient conditions for the so-called eigenvalue completion problem.

     

Mass‐lumping or not mass‐lumping for eigenvalue problems

In this article we analyze the effect of mass‐lumping in the linear triangular finite element approximation of second‐order elliptic eigenvalue problems. We prove that the eigenvalue obtained by using mass‐lumping is always below the one obtained with exact integration. For singular eigenfunctions, as those arising in non convex polygons, we prove that the eigenvalue obtained with mass‐lumping is above the exact eigenvalue when the mesh size is small enough. So, we conclude that the use of mass‐lumping is convenient in the singular case. When the eigenfunction is smooth several numerical experiments suggest that the eigenvalue computed with mass‐lumping is below the exact one if the mesh is not too coarse. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An inverse spectral problem for a nonsymmetric differential operator: Reconstruction of eigenvalue problem

In this paper, an algorithm is established to reconstruct an eigenvalue problem from the given data satisfying certain conditions. These conditions are proved to be not only necessary but also sufficient for the given data to coincide with the spectral characteristics corresponding to the reconstructed eigenvalue problem.     

On solving energy-dependent partitioned eigenvalue problem by genetic algorithm: The case of real symmetric Hamiltonian matrices

An energy-dependent partitioning scheme is explored for extracting a small number of eigenvalues of a real symmetric matrix with the help of genetic algorithm. The proposed method is tested with matrices of different sizes (30 × 30 to 1000 × 1000). Comparison is made with Löwdin’s strategy for solving the problem. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the GA-based method are analyzed
