Nonnegative curvature and cobordism type

When is a Riemannian submersion homogeneous?

We study the structure of the most common type of Riemannian submersions, namely those whose fibers are given by the orbits of an isometric group action on a Riemannian manifold. Special emphasis is given to the case where the ambient space has nonnegative curvature. The first author was supported by research grant MTM2004-04794-MEC. Most of this work was done during a visit of the second author to Madrid, financed in part by funds of the aforementioned grant.     

Integral representations of nonnegative solutions for parabolic equations and elliptic Martin boundaries

We consider nonnegative solutions of a parabolic equation in a cylinder D×(0,T), where D is a noncompact domain of a Riemannian manifold. Under the assumption [IU] (i.e., the associated heat kernel is intrinsically ultracontractive), we establish an integral representation theorem: any nonnegative solution is represented uniquely by an integral on (D×{0})∪(M_∂D×[0,T)), where M_∂D is the Martin boundary of D for the associated elliptic operator. We apply it in a unified way to several concrete examples to explicitly represent nonnegative solutions. We also show that [IU] implies the condition [SP] (i.e., the constant function 1 is a small perturbation of the elliptic operator on D).     

STRUCTURES OF CIRCULANT INVERSE M-MATRICES

In this paper, we present a useful result on the structures of circulant inverse Mmatrices. It is shown that if the n × n nonnegative circulant matrix A = Circ[c0, c1,… , c（n- 1）] is not a positive matrix and not equal to c0I, then A is an inverse M-matrix if and only if there exists a positive integer k, which is a proper factor of n, such that cjk 〉 0 for j=0,1…, [n-k/k], the other ci are zero and Circ[co, ck,… , c（n-k）] is an inverse M-matrix. The result is then extended to the so-called generalized circulant inverse M-matrices.     

Obstructions to nonnegative curvature and rational homotopy theory

We establish a link between rational homotopy theory and the problem which vector bundles admit a complete Riemannian metric of nonnegative sectional curvature. As an application, we show for a large class of simply-connected nonnegatively curved manifolds that, if lies in the class and is a torus of positive dimension, then ``most' vector bundles over admit no complete nonnegatively curved metrics.

     

On the sharpness of two-sided bounds for the Perron Root and of the related eigenvalue inclusion sets

The paper considers the sharpness problem for certain two-sided bounds for the Perron root of an irreducible nonnegative matrix. The results obtained are applied to prove the sharpness of the related eigenvalue inclusion sets in classes of matrices with fixed diagonal entries, bounded above deleted absolute row sums, and a partly specified irreducible sparsity pattern.
