Contractive multifunctions, fixed point inclusions and iterated multifunction systems

We study the properties of multifunction operators that are contractive in the Covitz-Nadler sense. In this situation, such operators T possess fixed points satisfying the relation x∈Tx. We introduce an iterative method involving projections that guarantees convergence from any starting point x₀∈X to a point x∈XT, the set of all fixed points of a multifunction operator T. We also prove a continuity result for fixed point sets XT as well as a “generalized collage theorem” for contractive multifunctions. These results can then be used to solve inverse problems involving contractive multifunctions. Two applications of contractive multifunctions are introduced: (i) integral inclusions and (ii) iterated multifunction systems.     

The circle as an attractor of an iterated function system on the plane

We give an iterated function system (IFS) on the plane with the circle as attractor. In doing this, we also give a sufficient condition for radially contracting functions on the plane (or on Rn) to be a contraction. A counterexample shows that radial contractiveness is not enough to be a contraction.     

The uniform modulus of continuity of iterated Brownian motion

LetX be a Brownian motion defined on the line (withX(0)=0) and letY be an independent Brownian motion defined on the nonnegative real numbers. For allt0, we define theiterated Brownian motion (IBM),Z, by setting . Geometry and combinatorics of Julia sets of real quadratic maps

For real a correspondence is made between the Julia setB forz(z–)², in the hyperbolic case, and the set of-chains±(±(±..., with the aid of Cremer's theorem. It is shown how a number of features ofB can be understood in terms of-chains. The structure ofB is determined by certain equivalence classes of-chains, fixed by orders of visitation of certain real cycles; and the bifurcation history of a given cycle can be conveniently computed via the combinatorics of-chains. The functional equations obeyed by attractive cycles are investigated, and their relation to-chains is given. The first cascade of period-doubling bifurcations is described from the point of view of the associated Julia sets and-chains. Certain Julia sets associated with the Feigenbaum function and some theorems of Lanford are discussed.Supported by NSF grant No. MCS-8104862.Supported by NSF grant No. MCS-8203325.     

Anomalous Energy Minima Surfaces

Previous publications^2–5 have examined the phenomenon of level crossings as predicted by the semiempirical techniques CNDO/2⁶, IMDO⁷, and MINDO/3⁸ for certain molecules when the total energy is viewed as a function of some conformational property. The purpose of this article is to examine this same phenomenon using the extended Hückel method(EHM)⁹, the iterated extended Hückel method(IEHM), and an ab-initio procedure with a minimal STO-3G basis set. The molecule chosen for this study is CO₂ due to its structural simplicity and since previous calculations^2–5 have demonstrated level crossing with this molecule.     

Iterated monoidal categories

We develop a notion of an n-fold monoidal category and show that it corresponds in a precise way to the notion of an n-fold loop space. Specifically, the group completion of the nerve of such a category is an n-fold loop space, and free n-fold monoidal categories give rise to a finite simplicial operad of the same homotopy type as the classical little cubes operad used to parametrize the higher H-space structure of an n-fold loop space. We also show directly that this operad has the same homotopy type as the n-th Smith filtration of the Barratt-Eccles operad and the n-th filtration of Berger's complete graph operad. Moreover, this operad contains an equivalent preoperad which gives rise to Milgram's small model for when n=2 and is very closely related to Milgram's model of for n>2.
