Spatially localized states in Marangoni convection in binary mixtures

Two-dimensional Marangoni convection in binary mixtures is studied in periodic domains with large spatial period in the horizontal. For negative Soret coefficients convection may set in via growing oscillations which evolve into standing waves. With increasing amplitude these waves undergo a transition to traveling waves, and then to more complex waveforms. Out of this state emerge stable stationary spatially localized structures embedded in a background of small amplitude standing waves. The relation of these states to the time-independent spatially localized states that characterize the so-called pinning region is investigated by exploring the stability properties of the latter, and the associated instabilities are studied using direct numerical simulation in time.     

Probabilistic approach to homoclinic chaos

Three-dimensional systems possessing a homoclinic orbit associated to a saddle focus with eigenvalues ±i, – and giving rise to homoclinic chaos when the Shil'nikov condition < is satisfied are studied. The 2D Poincaré map and its 1D contractions capturing the essential features of the flow are given. At homoclinicity, these 1D maps are found to be piecewise linear. This property allows one to reduce the Frobenius—Perron equation to a master equation whose solution is analytically known. The probabilistic properties such as the time autocorrelation function of the state variablex are explicitly derived.     

Concentration of homoclinic solutions for some fourth-order equations with sublinear indefinite nonlinearities

In this paper, we mainly explore the phenomenon of concentration of homoclinic solutions for a class of nonperiodic fourth-order equations with sublinear indefinite nonlinearities. The proof is based on variational methods.     

Existence of homoclinic solutions for nonlinear second-order coupled systems

This work presents sufficient conditions for the existence of homoclinic solutions for second order coupled discontinuous systems of differential equations on the real line without the usual growth condition in the literature.The arguments apply the fixed point theory, Green's functions technique, $L^1$-Carathéodory functions, lower and upper solutions and Schauder's fixed point theorem.     

Homoclinic orbits for first order Hamiltonian systems with some twist conditions

In this paper, we study the nonperiodic first-order Hamiltonian system ù = J L(t)u +J H(t, u), where H ∈ C1(R × R2n). With some assumptions on L, the corresponding Hamiltonian operator has only discrete spectrum. By using the index theory for self-adjoint operator equation,we establish the existence of multiple homoclinic orbits for the asymptotically quadratic nonlinearty satisfying some twist conditions between infinity and origin.     

Homoclinic bifurcation for a general state-dependent Kolmogorov type predator–prey model with harvesting

In this paper, a general Kolmogorov type predator–prey model is considered. Together with a constant-yield predator harvesting, the state dependent feedback control strategies which take into account the impulsive harvesting on predators as well as the impulsive stocking on the prey are incorporated in the process of population interactions. We firstly study the existence of an order-1 homoclinic cycle for the system. It is shown that an order-1 positive periodic solution bifurcates from the order-1 homoclinic cycle through a homoclinic bifurcation as the impulsive predator harvesting rate crosses some critical value. The uniqueness and stability of the order-1 positive periodic solution are derived by applying the geometry theory of differential equations and the method of successor function. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the main results. These results indicate that careful management of resources and harvesting policies is required in the applied conservation and renewable resource contexts.

Homoclinic Bifurcations in Symmetric Unfoldings of a Singularity with Three-fold Zero Eigenvalue

In this paper we study the singularity at the origin with three-fold zero eigenvalue forsymmetric vector fields with nilpotent linear part and 3-jet C^∞-equivalent to y δ/δx zδ/δy ax^2yδ/δz with a≠0. We first obtain several subfamilies of the symmetric versal unfoldings of this singularityby using the normal form and blow-up methods under some conditions, and derive the local and global bifurcation behavior, then prove analytically the existence of the Sil‘nikov homoclinic bifurcation for some subfamilies of the symmetric versal unfoldings of this singularity, by using the generalized Mel‘nikov methods of a homoclinic orbit to a hyperbolic or non-hyperbolic equilibrium in a highdimensional space.     

Existence of homoclinic solution for the second order Hamiltonian systems

An existence theorem of homoclinic solution is obtained for a class of the nonautonomous second order Hamiltonian systems , ∀t∈R, by the minimax methods in the critical point theory, specially, the generalized mountain pass theorem, where L(t) is unnecessary uniformly positively definite for all t∈R, and W(t,x) satisfies the superquadratic condition W(t,x)/|x|²→+∞ as |x|→∞ uniformly in t, and need not satisfy the global Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.
