Cycloparaphenylene (CPP) series are molecular models for graphene armchair edges: trends in their aromaticity and cyclic conjugation are evaluated

Cycloparaphenylene ([r]CPP) and cyclacene ([r]CA) series are models for short carbon nanotubes. It is shown that armchair edges in model cycloparaphenylenes possess greater aromaticity and cyclic conjugation than do zigzag edges in model cyclacenes. According to Aihara’s bond resonance energy (BRE) and Bosanac and Gutman energy effect (ef) measurements, cycloparaphenylenes are twice as aromatic as cyclacenes. The general solution of all eigenvalues of all members of the cycloparaphenylene series is given. The origin of the recurrence of some eigenvalues are determined.     

Feedback controlled periodic states for different kinds of photorefractive nonlinear response

We investigate analytically and numerically the influence of the type of the photorefractive nonlinear response on the periodic states (attractors) which occur during feedback controlled 2W-coupling and correspond to almost 100% diffraction efficiency of the dynamic index grating. In addition to the case of the local response typical, for example, for LiNbO₃ crystals we consider the cases of nonlocal (diffusive) response (BaTiO₃, SBN) and resonant response (DC-biased BSO, BTO, and BGO crystals). It is shown that the conditions for the transition to the periodic states and their apparent characteristics are strongly different for the two limiting cases above. Fixed points in the family of convex representations of a maximal monotone operator

Any maximal monotone operator can be characterized by a convex function. The family of such convex functions is invariant under a transformation connected with the Fenchel-Legendre conjugation. We prove that there exists a convex representation of the operator which is a fixed point of this conjugation.

     

Phase Conjugation in Saturable Absorbing Dye Films by Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing and Holographic Processes Using Nanosecond Pulse and CW Lasers

We report on the simultaneous generation of phase-conjugate signals by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) and holographic processes using a nanosecond pulse and a CW lasers in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films doped with four kinds of saturable absorbing dyes. For the pulse laser, of the four kinds of dye-doped PVA films, the erythrosine B-doped PVA and uranine doped-PVA films generate PC signals only by the DFWM process, while the other dye-doped PVA films generate PC signals simultaneously by not only the DFWM process but also the holographic process. Especially, the safranin T-doped PVA film generates strong PC signals by the holographic process. In contrast, all of the dye-doped PVA films generate the two types of PC signals for the CW laser. The fading of dye molecules is found to result in the generation of the holographic component of PC signals which governs the temporal behavior of the total PC signals.     

Fenchel duality, Fitzpatrick functions and the extension of firmly nonexpansive mappings

Recently, S. Reich and S. Simons provided a novel proof of the Kirszbraun-Valentine extension theorem using Fenchel duality and Fitzpatrick functions. In the same spirit, we provide a new proof of an extension result for firmly nonexpansive mappings with an optimally localized range.

     

Synthesis and antibody conjugation of magnetic nanoparticles with improved specific power absorption rates for alternating magnetic field cancer therapy

Bionized nanoferrite (BNF) particles with high specific power absorption rates were synthesized in the size range of 20–100 nm by high-pressure homogenization for targeted cancer therapy with alternating magnetic fields. Several strategies were used to conjugate antibodies to the BNF particles. These strategies were compared using an immunoassay to find optimal conditions to reach a high immunoreactivity of the final antibody–particle conjugate.     

Dual Problems and Separation of Sets: Lagrange and Fenchel Duality

An extremum problem is embedded in a parametric scheme which contains, as a particular case, the classic perturbation function. The introduction of the image of the embedded problem allows one to derive a generalized duality and, in particular, Lagrangian and Fenchel duality.     

The Spaces b~p with 0 < p < 1

Let 0 < p < 1. In this paper we prove that the Bergman norm on the p-th Bergman space bp(H) is equivalent to certain "normal direction norm" as well as certain "tangential direction norm", where H = Rn-1 × R is the upper half space. As an application, we get the boundedness of harmonic conjugation operators on bp(H).     

Determination of contact stresses in problems on bending of a package of transversely isotropic bars

A mechanomathematical model for bending of packages of transversely isotropic bars of rectangular cross section is proposed. Adhesion, slippage, and separation zones between the bars are considered. The resolving equations for deflections and tangential displacements are supplemented with a system of linear differential equations for determining the normal and tangential contact stresses, and boundary conditions are formulated. A scheme for analytical solution of two contact problems—a package under the action of a distributed load and a round stamp—is considered. For these packages, a transition is performed from the initial system of differential equations for determining the contact stresses, where the unknown functions are interrelated by recurrent relationships, to one linear differential equation of fourth order and then to a system of linear algebraic equations.
