Coupled intervals in the discrete calculus of variations: necessity and sufficiency

In this work we study nonnegativity and positivity of a discrete quadratic functional with separately varying endpoints. We introduce a notion of an interval coupled with 0, and hence, extend the notion of conjugate interval to 0 from the case of fixed to variable endpoint(s). We show that the nonnegativity of the discrete quadratic functional is equivalent to each of the following conditions: The nonexistence of intervals coupled with 0, the existence of a solution to Riccati matrix equation and its boundary conditions. Natural strengthening of each of these conditions yields a characterization of the positivity of the discrete quadratic functional. Since the quadratic functional under consideration could be a second variation of a discrete calculus of variations problem with varying endpoints, we apply our results to obtain necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for such problems. This paper generalizes our recent work in [R. Hilscher, V. Zeidan, Comput. Math. Appl., to appear], where the right endpoint is fixed.     

Conjugate addition of pyrroles to α,β-unsaturated ketones using copper bromide as a catalyst

Copper bromide was used as a catalyst for the addition of pyrroles to enones. When both the reactants were used in equimolar amounts, mono and dialkylated products were obtained. However, the use of excess enone furnished only dialkylated products. Thus, copper bromide was shown to be an efficient catalyst for the dialkylation of pyrroles.     

Anisotropic transport of charge and complexified duality

Charge transport in two dimensions provides an ideal laboratory for investigating parameter space geometries. The Onsager relations for anisotropic transport in a parity-violating external field endow these spaces with a highly nontrivial complex (and Kähler) structure, which can be given a simple geometrical interpretation. A large class of Coulomb gases exhibiting this structure have a generalized Kramers-Wannier symmetry (complexfield duality) which is contained in the modular group. Knowledge of this symmetry and the degrees of freedom encoded in the Coulomb gas appear to be sufficient to determine the global phase diagram and the renormalization group fixed-point structure, including the critical exponents. This accounts for all the scaling behavior observed so far in the quantum Hall system.     

Lorentz-Compton佯谬与一个双赢判决性散射实验设计

通过对“可见光区域是否存在Compton效应”的讨论而进一步深化到经典条件下“光的量子理论能否包含光的经典电磁理论”的实验验证,发现了Lorentz-Compton佯谬,并基于逆Compton散射设计了一个敏感而又可行的双赢判决性散射实验来解决此佯谬。     

Necessary and sufficient conditions in constrained optimization

Additional conditions are attached to the Kuhn-Tucker conditions giving a set of conditions which are both necessary and sufficient for optimality in constrained optimization, under appropriate constraint qualifications. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also given for optimality of the dual problem. Duality and converse duality are treated accordingly.     

Fenchel duality, Fitzpatrick functions and the extension of firmly nonexpansive mappings

Recently, S. Reich and S. Simons provided a novel proof of the Kirszbraun-Valentine extension theorem using Fenchel duality and Fitzpatrick functions. In the same spirit, we provide a new proof of an extension result for firmly nonexpansive mappings with an optimally localized range.

利用不动点定理,分别证明了在自反Banach空间中极大单调算子值域扰动的抽象结论和在H ilbert空间中m增生映射值域的扰动结果,这些结论是对以往一些工作的推广;然后,利用文中的新结论讨论了一类微分方程解的存在性.     

Commutators, C0-semigroups and resolvent estimates

We study the existence and the continuity properties of the boundary values on the real axis of the resolvent of a self-adjoint operator H in the framework of the conjugate operator method initiated by Mourre. We allow the conjugate operator A to be the generator of a C₀-semigroup (finer estimates require A to be maximal symmetric) and we consider situations where the first commutator [H,iA] is not comparable to H. The applications include the spectral theory of zero mass quantum field models.     

T-duality in Affine NA Toda Models

The construction of non-Abelian affine Toda models is discussed in terms of its underlying Lie algebraic structure. It is shown that a subclass of such non-conformal two-dimensional integrable models naturally leads to the construction of a pair of actions, which share the same spectra and are related by canonical transformations.
