A dual open coloring axiom

We discuss a dual of the Open Coloring Axiom introduced by Abraham et al. [U. Abraham, M. Rubin, S. Shelah, On the consistency of some partition theorems for continuous colorings, and the structure of ₁-dense real order types, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 29 (2) (1985) 123–206] and show that it follows from a statement about continuous colorings on Polish spaces that is known to be consistent. We mention some consequences of the new axiom and show that implies that all cardinal invariants in Cichoń’s diagram are at least ₂.     

Moments of distributions related to digital expansions

The paper studies certain (probability) measures of binomial type defined in a recursive way on the unit interval. These measures are related to the sum-of-digit function and similar quantities. In particular, we undertake an asymptotic analysis of the moments of the corresponding distributions. This is done by a combination of a method based on the Mellin transform and the depoissonisation technique.     

Growth and homogeneity of matchbox manifolds

A matchbox manifold with one-dimensional leaves which has equicontinuous holonomy dynamics must be a homogeneous space, and so must be homeomorphic to a classical Vietoris solenoid. In this work, we consider the problem, what can be said about a matchbox manifold with equicontinuous holonomy dynamics, and all of whose leaves have at most polynomial growth type? We show that such a space must have a finite covering for which the global holonomy group of its foliation is nilpotent. As a consequence, we show that if the growth type of the leaves is polynomial of degree at most 3, then there exists a finite covering which is homogeneous. If the growth type of the leaves is polynomial of degree at least 4, then there are additional obstructions to homogeneity, which arise from the structure of nilpotent groups.     

Semimartingale: Itô or not ?

Itô semimartingales are the semimartingales whose characteristics are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We study the importance of this assumption for statistical inference on a discretely sampled semimartingale in terms of the identifiability of its characteristics, their estimation, and propose tests of the Itô property against the non-Itô alternative when the observed semimartingale is continuous, or discontinuous with finite activity jumps, and under a number of technical assumptions.     

Cantor-type cylindrical-coordinate method for differential equations with local fractional derivatives

In this Letter, we propose to use the Cantor-type cylindrical-coordinate method in order to investigate a family of local fractional differential operators on Cantor sets. Some testing examples are given to illustrate the capability of the proposed method for the heat-conduction equation on a Cantor set and the damped wave equation in fractal strings. It is seen to be a powerful tool to convert differential equations on Cantor sets from Cantorian-coordinate systems to Cantor-type cylindrical-coordinate systems.     

Phonon spectra in one-dimensional quasicrystals

The propagation of phonons in one-dimensional quasicrystals is investigated. We use the projection method which has been recently proposed to generate almost periodic tilings of the line. We define a natural Laplace operator on these structures, which models phonon (and also tight-binding electron) propagation. The selfsimilarity properties of the spectrum are discussed, as well as some characteristic features of the eigenstates, which are neither extended nor localized. The long-wavelength limit is examined in more detail; it is argued that one is the lower critical dimension for this type of models.
