The high value of the implicit option to choose a retirement date at which interest rates are particularly high and life annuities relatively cheap, leads to the possibility to introduce regret aversion in the retirement investment decision of defined contribution plan participants. As a remedy for regret aversion in retirement investment decisions, this paper develops and prices a lookback option on a life annuity contract. We determine a closed-form option value under the restriction that the option holder invests risklessly during the time to maturity of the option and without the guarantee that the exact amount of retirement wealth is converted into a life annuity at retirement. Thereafter the investment restriction is relaxed and the guarantee of exact conversion is imposed and the option is priced via Monte Carlo simulations in an economic environment with a stochastic discount factor. Option price sensitivities are determined via the pricing of alternative options. We find that the price of a lookback option, with a maturity of three years, amounts to 8%–9% of the wealth at the option issuance date. The option price is highly sensitive to the exercise price of the option, i.e. pricing alternative options (e.g. Asian) substantially lowers the price. Time to maturity and interest rate volatility are other important option price drivers. Asset allocation decisions and initial interest rates hardly affect the option price.  相似文献

We solve the optimal consumption and investment problem in an incomplete market, where borrowing constraints and insurer default risk are considered jointly. We derive in closed-form the optimal consumption and investment strategies. We find two main results by quantitative analysis. As insurer default risk increases, the proportion of wealth invested in stocks could increase when wealth is small, and decrease when wealth is large. As risk aversion increases, the voluntary annuity demand could increase when insurer default risk is low, and decrease when this risk is high.  相似文献

This paper seeks to determine whether governments should intervene in the private annuity market by directly providing public insurance in the form of annuities when both the government and the insurance companies could default. It is found that, although the government could default, intervening by means of an annuity can improve social welfare if the insurance companies could default and the expected return on the public annuity is greater than the rate of return on a risk-free bond. We also find that, under actuarially fair pricing, the government should provide more in terms of a public annuity than the optimal amount of the annuity that the individual purchases in the private market if the government is less likely to default on the public annuity than an insurance company would in the case of a private annuity.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) model for studying the optimal investment strategy before and after retirement in a defined contribution pension plan where benefits are paid under the form of annuities; annuities are supposed to be guaranteed during a certain fixed period of time. Using Legendre transform, dual theory and variable change technique, we derive the explicit solutions for the power and exponential utility functions in two different periods (before and after retirement). Each solution contains a modified factor which reflects an investor’s decision to hedge the volatility risk. In order to investigate the influence of the modified factor on the optimal strategy, we analyze the property of the modified factor. The results show that the dynamic behavior of the modified factor for the power utility mainly depends on the time and the investor’s risk aversion coefficient, whereas it only depends on the time in the exponential case.  相似文献

Even in case of the Brownian motion as most natural rate of return model it appears too difficult to obtain analytic expressions for most risk measures of constant continuous annuities. In literature the so-called comonotonic approximations have been proposed but these still require the evaluation of integrals. In this paper we show that these integrals can sometimes be computed, and we obtain explicit approximations for some popular risk measures for annuities.Next, we show how these results can be used to obtain fully analytic expressions for lower and upper bounds for the price of a continuously sampled European-style Asian option with fixed exercise price. These analytic lower bound prices are as sharp as those from [Rogers, L.C.G., Shi, Z., 1995. The value of an Asian option. J. Appl. Probab. 32, 1077–1088], if not sharper, but in contrast do not require any longer the evaluation of a two-dimensional or a one-dimensional integral.  相似文献

Increases in the life expectancy, the low interest rate environment and the tightening solvency regulation have led to the rebirth of tontines. Compared to annuities, where insurers bear all the longevity risk, policyholders bear most of the longevity risk in a tontine. Following Donnelly and Young (2017), we come up with an innovative retirement product which contains the annuity and the tontine as special cases: a tontine with a minimum guaranteed payment. The payoff of this product consists of a guaranteed payoff and a call option written on a tontine. Extending Donnelly and Young (2017), we consider the tontine design described in Milevsky and Salisbury (2015) for designing the new product and find that it is able to achieve a better risk sharing between policyholders and insurers than annuities and tontines. For the majority of risk-averse policyholders, the new product can generate a higher expected lifetime utility than annuities and tontines. For the insurer, the new product is able to reduce the (conditional) expected loss drastically compared to an annuity, while the loss probability remains fairly the same. In addition, by varying the guaranteed payments, the insurer is able to provide a variety of products to policyholders with different degrees of risk aversion and liquidity needs.  相似文献

We estimate the joint survival probability of spouses using a large random sample drawn from a Dutch census. As benchmarks we use two bivariate Weibull models. We consider more flexible models, using a semi-nonparametric approach, by extending the independent Weibull distribution using squared polynomials. Also based on a nonparametric comparison, we find that extending the independent Weibull distribution by a squared third order polynomial shows the best performance. We illustrate our model by calculating remaining life expectancies and annuity values. We find that the husbands life expectancy at birth is generally increasing with his wifes age of death and the wifes life expectancy at birth is generally increasing with her husbands age of death. Ignoring the dependence between the remaining lifetimes of spouses may lead to an underestimation of the value of a joint annuity and an overestimation of the value of a single-life annuity, but less than suggested on the basis of the previous literature.  相似文献

Variable annuities with guaranteed minimum lifetime withdrawal benefits (VA/GLWB) offer retirees longevity protection, exposure to equity markets, and access to flexible withdrawals in emergencies. We model how risk-averse retirees optimally withdraw from the products, balancing returns and the embedded longevity protection. Assuming reasonable individual preferences, the resulting cash flow generates a Money’s Worth Ratio of around 0.9 for our stylized VA/GLWB in the post-crisis product, considerably lower than what was offered prior to 2008. Sensitivity analyses with respect to portfolio choice, mortality, fees, and guaranteed withdrawal rates show that MWRs range from 0.80 to 1.0, with the portfolio choice making the biggest difference. For most parameter choices, the utility value of the VA/GLWB exceeds that of a similar mutual fund, but it is less than for a fixed annuity. Interestingly, VA/GLWB withdrawals in early retirement can optimally exceed contract maximum withdrawals, despite the fact that this reduces future withdrawal guarantees.  相似文献

We recast the valuation of annuities and life insurance contracts under mortality and interest rates, both of which are stochastic, as a problem of solving a system of linear equations with random perturbations. A sequence of uniform approximations is developed which allows for fast and accurate computation of expected values. Our reformulation of the valuation problem provides a general framework which can be employed to find insurance premiums and annuity values covering a wide class of stochastic models for mortality and interest rate processes. The proposed approach provides a computationally efficient alternative to Monte Carlo based valuation in pricing mortality-linked contingent claims.  相似文献
