Wijsman and Hit-and-Miss Topologies of Quasi-Metric Spaces

The relationship between the Wijsman topology and (proximal) hit-and-miss topologies is studied in the realm of quasi-metric spaces. We establish the equivalence between these hypertopologies in terms of Urysohn families of sets. Our results generalize well-known theorems and provide easier proofs. In particular, we prove that for a quasi-pseudo-metrizable space (X,T) the Vietoris topology on the set P ₀(X) of all nonempty subsets of X is the supremum of all Wijsman topologies associated with quasi-pseudo-metrics compatible with T. We also show that for a quasi-pseudo-metric space (X,d) the Hausdorff extended quasi-pseudo-metric is compatible with the Wijsman topology on P ₀(X) if and only if d ^–1 is hereditarily precompact.     

Differentiable Functionals and Smoothed Bootstrap

The differentiability properties of statistical functionals have several interesting applications. We are concerned with two of them. First, we prove a result on asymptotic validity for the so-called smoothed bootstrap (where the artificial samples are drawn from a density estimator instead of being resampled from the original data). Our result can be considered as a smoothed analog of that obtained by Parr (1985, Stat. Probab. Lett., 3, 97-100) for the standard, unsmoothed bootstrap. Second, we establish a result on asymptotic normality for estimators of type generated by a density functional being a density estimator. As an application, a quick and easy proof of the asymptotic normality of , (the plug-in estimator of the integrated squared density ) is given.     

Functions related to convexity and smoothness of normed spaces

We introduce a few functions related to convexity and smoothness of normed spaces. Those functions turn out to be moduli of convexity or smoothness or play an intermediate role. We calculate the exact formulas for introduced functions in some classical Banach spaces. An application to geometry of normed spaces is also indicated.

A genetic k-medoids clustering algorithm

We propose a hybrid genetic algorithm for k-medoids clustering. A novel heuristic operator is designed and integrated with the genetic algorithm to fine-tune the search. Further, variable length individuals that encode different number of medoids (clusters) are used for evolution with a modified Davies-Bouldin index as a measure of the fitness of the corresponding partitionings. As a result the proposed algorithm can efficiently evolve appropriate partitionings while making no a priori assumption about the number of clusters present in the datasets. In the experiments, we show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and compare it with other related clustering methods.     

Connectedness in Metric Frames

A new metric diameter for a locally connected metric frame is constructed which is finer than the original one. Amongst other results, this construction allows a proof that the category of uniformly locally connected metric frames and uniform frame maps is reflective in the category of locally connected metric frames and uniform frame maps.
