In this paper, the possibility of using the gradients of the temperature and of the internal parameters as additional state variables in Continuum Thermodynamics is considered. The expressions of the two principles are discussed and Clausius–Duhem inequality is derived under an appropriate statement of the internal entropy production. We consider the onset of convection in a porous medium heated from below and subjected to a horizontal mean flow. The effect of porous inertia is studied, and the transverse aspect ratio a of the medium is taken into accout. We find that the dominant modes are longitudinal rolls (L.R) if a is an integer or transverse traveling rolls (T.R) if a is below ac with ac<1. When a is not an integer with a>ac, the setting on patterns are oscillatory three-dimensional structures (3D) for a>1 or T.R for ac<a<1 provided that the Reynolds number remains below a critical value ReK*. An exact three-dimensional analysis is developped for an axisymmetric loading acting on the surface of a semi-infinite medium composed by two transversely isotropic materials. The loading is assumed to be parallel to the elastic symmetry axis of the upper layer. The solutions of a concentrated force and a uniform loading distributed on a circle are obtained by exact integral expressions. Using a linear perturbation approach, we show that under quasi-static conditions, unbounded growth of perturbations coincides with localization under drained or undrained conditions. Under dynamic loadings, unbounded growth is related either to the emergence of stationary discontinuities (and these are set by drained conditions) or to the appearance of the flutter phenomenon (acceleration waves). For associative behaviour the inception of unbounded growth is always set (under both static and dynamic conditions) by the singularity of the drained acoustic tensor. It is only for non-associative flow that unbounded growth may correspond to undrained localization in quasi-static conditions and to flutter under dynamic conditions. We consider for the inverse problem of identifying locations and certain properties of the shapes of small dielectric inhomogeneities in a homogeneous background medium from boundary measurements on part of the boundary or dynamic boundary measurements for a finite time interval. The problem of viscous fluid past an axisymmetric body embedded in a fluid saturated porous medium is studied using the Brinkman's extension. A general formula for the drag on the body is derived in the form of a limit of an expression involving the stream function characterizing the flow. The flow past an axisymmetric approximate sphere is also considered. The stream function in this case is obtained in terms of Bessel functions and Gegenbauer's functions. The drag acting on the body is evaluated by using the formula derived. Its variation is studied with respect to geometric and permeability parameters. We consider the homogenization of an elastostatic problem in a strongly heterogeneous periodic medium made of two connected components having comparable tensors of elastic moduli, separated by a third medium (soft layer), the thickness of which is of the same order ε than the basic periodicity cell, and such that its elastic moduli tensor becomes infinitely small following a rate εr, r>0. Radon transfer between a liquid phase and a gaseous phase is modelled by a Robin's condition (radon flux at the common interface is expressed as function of radon concentrations in the two phases). This condition involves two constants: Ostwald's coefficient (α) and the transfer velocity coefficient (β). Assuming the value of α is known, a method is proposed to determinate the value of β, by studying the radon transfer phenomenon at the laboratory scale. Knowing the initial radon concentrations, the experiment consists in measuring how long the radon flux passes through the common interface. In this stabilisation time radon transport is governed in each phase by diffusion and disintegration. Then, determination of β is equivalent to solving an inverse problem formulated using measured data. A numerical procedure is developed to solve this problem.
