Heat-treatment studies of molybdenum oxide-monohydrate

The dehydration of molybdic acid, MoO₃---H₂O, was studied by thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry and FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that an intermediate phase, MoO₃-2/3H₂O is formed at 216 °C and the monoclinic form of MoO₃ is grown above 350 °C. The mechanism of dehydration and structural rearrangement were confirmed by the features of the infrared spectra showing formation of corner-shared MoO₆ octahedra.     

Modulated DSC for gas hydrates analysis

Modulated DSC has been applied to the study of methane, ethane and propane hydrates at different hydrate and ice concentrations. The reversing component of the TMDSC curves, makes it possible to characterize such hydrates. Methane and ethane hydrates show the melting-decomposition peak at a temperatures higher than the ice contained in the sample, while propane hydrate melts and decomposes at lower temperature than the ice present in the sample. The hydrate peaks tend to disappear if the hydrate is stored at atmospheric pressure. Guest size and cavity occupation fix the heat of dissociation and stability of the hydrates, as confirmed by parallel tests on tetrahydrofurane hydrates.     

Clathrate formation in water-cyclic ether systems at high pressures

Experimental data on the investigation of the water-trimethyleneoxide system,P, t, x phase diagram (up to 6 kbar) are presented. The results are compared with those on water systems with ethyleneoxide, 1,3- and 1,4-dioxane, 1,3-dioxolane and tetrahydrofuran, on the basis of which a summarizedP, t, x diagram is plotted for water-cyclic ether systems. It is shown that in all the systems in which a cubic structure II hydrate forms at 1 bar, it eventually turns to cubic structure I under pressure. The nature of high pressure hydrates is discussed.Dedicated to the memory of D. W. Davidson.     

Thermal and spectroscopic investigation of europium and samarium sulphates hydrates by TG-FTIR and ICP-MS techniques

The investigation of europium(III) sulphate hydrate and samarium(III) sulphate hydrate was performed by thermal analysis (TG-DTG) and simultaneous infrared evolved gas analysis-Fourier transformed infrared (EGA-FTIR) spectroscopy. The TG, DTG and DTA curves were recorded at the 25–1400 °C in the dynamic air atmosphere by TG/DTA analyser. The infrared evolved gas analysis was obtained on the FTIR spectrometer. Eu₂(SO₄)₃·nH₂O (n = 3.97) and Sm₂(SO₄)₃·nH₂O (n = 8.11) were analysed, the dehydration and decomposition steps were investigated and the water content was calculated. The formation of different oxysulphates was studied.

The trace rare earth elements in Eu and Sm sulphates were determined by ICP-MS. The concentration of trace Eu, Sm, La, Gd, Y and Ce ranged from 3.9 × 10⁻⁶ to 1.5 × 10⁻⁴% (m/m).

[Rb₂(H₂O)₂][Re₃(μ-Cl)₃Br₇(H₂O)₂]₂ · H₂O, a Mixed Halide-Hydrate with the Anionic Dimer {[Re₃(μ-Cl)₃Br₇(H₂O)₂]₂ · H₂O}^2? [Rb₂(H₂O)₂][Re₃(μ-Cl)₃Br₇(H₂O)₂]₂ · H₂O crystallizes as dark redbrown single crystals from an hydrobromic-acid solution of ReCl₃ and RbBr at 0°C. An important feature of the crystal structure (monoclinic, C2/c; a = 1494.61(8); b = 835.71(4); c = 3079.96(19) pm; β = 97.801(4)°; V_m = 573.9(4) cm³mol^?1; R = 0.060; R_w = 0.038) is the connection of two anions [Re₃(μ-Cl)₃Br₇(H₂O)₂]^? via a water molecule to dimers, {[Re₃(μ-Cl)₃Br₇(H₂O)₂]₂ · H₂O}^2?. These dimeric units are contained in slabs that are stacked in the [001] direction and held together by Rb⁺ cations and crystal water.     

Nanostructural Approach to Proton Ordering in Gas Hydrate Cages

A nanostructural approach to analysis of proton ordering in gas hydrate cages has been worked out within the framework of the topological model of strong and weak H-bonds. The approach involves rejection of the periodic boundary conditions, decomposition of the H-bond net into spherical layers, and two-dimensional drawing of the structure of spherical (spheroidal) fragments in the form of conjugate Schlegel diagrams. To analyze proton ordering in the spherical fragments composed of gas hydrate voids, we used the simulated annealing procedure and the correlation extension method proposed earlier.     

Crystal hydrates: an investigation of the use of crystal hydrates as stationary phases in gas chromatography

Summary The use of crystallohydrates, crystallohydrate solutions and melts as stationary phases in gas chromatography has been proposed. Crystallohydrates have been shown to display high selectivity in the separation of polar organic compounds when use is made of water vapours as the mobile phase. Some aspects of gas-liquid chromatography in water vapours and with the stationary phase comprising crystallohydrates have been studied, and the preliminary results obtained point to the desirability of further progress in this field.Presented at the 14th International Symposium on Chromatography London, September, 1982     

Characterization of hydrates of norfloxacin

Norfloxacin, a nalidixic acid analog with antimicrobial properties, exists in different hydrated forms. Three of these crystal forms were reproducibly prepared and characterized by analytical techniques that included infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, solution microcalorimetry and pulsed nuclear-magnetic resonance spectroscopy.These studies showed that the dihydrate is the thermodynamically stable entity at ambient temperatures and humidities.

Solid-liquid equilibrium diagrams of common ion binary salt hydrate mixtures involving nitrates and chlorides of magnesium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and iron(III)

The solid-liquid equilibrium diagrams of binary mixtures involving magnesium nitrate hexahydrate with cobalt nitrate hexahydrate, nickel nitrate hexahydrate (partly), manganese nitrate tetrahydrate, and iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate and of magnesium chloride hexahydrate with cobalt and nickel chlorides hexahydrates and manganese chloride tetrahydrate, and the of two manganese salts were determined. Those diagrams that showed a simple eutectic were fitted by the Ott equation and where the required BET parameters were available, the magnesium salt rich parts of the liquidus were modeled by means of this method.
