Using a system based on non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detectors, evolved gas analysis (EGA) was able to identify and quantify the principal volatiles produced by heating powdered samples of UK brick clays. From these results, atmospheric emissions likely to result from brick production can be predicted. In addition, EGA results for extruded brick clay test pieces are significantly different from those of powdered samples. Within an extruded brick clay body, evolved gases are contained within a pore system and evolved gas-solid phase reactions also occur. This EGA study provides further evidence on the nature of firing reactions within brick clay bodies. The qualitative and quantitative influence of heating rate — a key process condition in brick manufacture — on gas release is also outlined.Dedicated to Dr. Robert Mackenzie on the occasion of his 75th birthday  相似文献

Al-pillared clays supported rare earths (RE/Al-PILC) are prepared and used as supports of palladium catalysts for deep oxidation of low concentrations of benzene (130-160 ppm). The supports and catalysts are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), FT-IR, BET, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). The results show that Al-pillaring results in a strong increase in the basal spacing (d0 0 1) from about 1.2 to 1.8 nm, and an increase in the BET surface area from 63.6 (±3.2) to 238.8 (±11.9) m2/g. Activity tests of deep oxidation of low concentration benzene show catalysts supported on Al-PILC and RE/Al-PILC are obviously more active than that on raw clay. Pd/6% Ce/Al-PILC, in particular, can catalyze the complete oxidation of low concentration benzene at a temperature as low as about 290 °C.  相似文献

Rhodium catalysts have been prepared on palygorskite and montmorillonite (clay) supports by reduction with hydrogen (1 atmosphere) at room temperature of a cationic organometallic rhodium compound anchored to the support. The activity of these catalysts for the hydrogenation of liquid-phase 1-hexene remains constant with increase of prehydrogenation time and with re-use for several runs. No rhodium leaching is observed.  相似文献

A fully coupled formulation combining reactive transport and an existing thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) code is presented. Special attention has been given to phenomena likely to be encountered in clay barriers used as part of containment systems of nuclear waste. The types of processes considered include hydrolysis, complex formation, oxidation/reduction reactions, acid/base reactions, precipitation/dissolution of minerals and cation exchange. Both kinetically-controlled and equilibrium-controlled reactions have been incorporated. The total analytical concentrations (including precipitated minerals) are adopted as basic transport variables and chemical equilibrium is achieved by minimizing Gibbs Free Energy. The formulation has been incorporated in a general purpose computer code capable of performing numerical analysis of engineering problems. A validation exercise concerning a laboratory experiment involving the heating and hydration of an expansive compacted clay is described.  相似文献

The construction of frame wavelets with compact supports is a meaningful problem in wavelet analysis. In particular, it is a hard work to construct the frame wavelets with explicit analytic forms. For a given n × n real expansive matrix A, the frame-sets with respect to A are a family of sets in R^n. Based on the frame-sets, a class of high-dimensional frame wavelets with analytic forms are constructed, which can be non-bandlimited, or even compactly supported. As an application, the construction is illustrated by several examples, in which some new frame wavelets with compact supports are constructed. Moreover, since the main result of this paper is about general dilation matrices, in the examples we present a family of frame wavelets associated with some non-integer dilation matrices that is meaningful in computational geometry.  相似文献

The swelling properties of Al-pillared clays, obtained from five different smectites, were studied using X-ray diffraction. These clays, the dioctahedral beidellite and montmorillonite and the trioctahedral saponite, hectorite and laponite differ in source of isomorphic substitution and represent a series of decreasing basicity along the siloxane plane. An Al oxyhydroxy cation was inserted between the layers to form the respective pillared clays and these clays were heated incrementally to 600°C. The XRD peaks at each stage of heating were recorded as well as the same samples subsequently wetted. Basal spacings of each clay at each stage of dehydration d rehydration indicated that the swelling of tetrahedrally substituted saponite and beidellite was indeed restricted, compared with the other three clays. This was attributed to greater basicity of the oxygen plane of beidellite and saponite due to tetrahedral substitution of Si by Al, resulting in an increase in the strength of hydrogen bonds between either water or the interlayer polyhydroxy cation and the clay.The data from the XRD analyses helped in addition, to clarify the thermal transformations of the Keggin ion itself. According to the changes in thed-spacings of the pillared clays it was concluded that the Keggin ion lost its structural water at 200°C and dehydroxylated in a range beginning at 350°C. In the present work, the interaction between5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphine (TMPyP) and its metallated form(CoTMPyP) with three cationic clays was investigatedby X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-VIS and resonance Ramanspectroscopies. Sodium montmorillonites K10 and KSFand a synthetic fluorohectorite (FHT) containingdifferent macrocycle loadings, were prepared by an ionexchange reaction. In nonsaturated KSF and FHT, theCoTMPyP molecule assumes a flat orientation, relativeto the host layers, giving rise to at least twoabsorption bands in the Soret region (ca. 445 and 465 nm)assigned to adsorbed and intercalated CoTMPyP,respectively. For the delaminated K10 sample, a broadband centered around 456 nm, indicates a majorcontribution from the metalloporphyrin on the clayexternal surfaces. The electronic spectra of FHTsamples containing increasing amounts of CoTMPyPshow bands red shifted even when a small amount ofporphyrin is used, suggesting that the electroniclevels of the macrocycle are more affected by theinteraction with the clay than by the metalloporphyrindistortion inside the galleries. The resonance Ramanspectra obtained for all CoTMPyP samples presentedonly minor shifts in peak positions and band width,with the exception of the FHT saturated sample, wherethe bands are clearly broader when compared to otherloadings, suggesting that porphyrin aggregation isoccurring. In the case of TMPyP, the bands at ca. 430and 468 nm were assigned to nonprotonated andprotonated molecules, respectively. This assignment issupported by resonance Raman spectroscopy, which alsoshowed the 2 mode (ca. 1550 cm-1) to bethe most sensitive peak to protonation.  相似文献

The adsorption of 4,4-bipyridyl by natural sepiolite and smectite group clay minerals (bentonite, hectorite and saponite) from Anatolia (Turkey) has been studied using vibrational spectroscopy. Investigation of Fourier-transform infrared and Fourier-transform Raman spectra of adsorbed 4,4-bipyridyl indicate the presence of chemisorbed species. However, any evidence for the generation of anionic species on the surface of the phyllosilicates has not been detected. It is proposed that the adsorbed bipyridyl molecules on sepiolite are centrosymmetric and H-bonded to the surface hydroxyls through both the nitrogen lone pairs as bidentate ligands. The adsorbed bipyridyl molecules on the smectite group clays are coordinated to exchangeable cations both directly and also indirectly through water as monodentate ligands. XRD patterns of the clays studied are also recorded.  相似文献

Two methacrylate‐modified clays have been prepared and used to produce nanocomposites of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) by in situ polymerization. These nanocomposites have been characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimetry and the evaluation of mechanical properties. When the clay contains only a single methacrylate unit, the styrene system is exfoliated but methacrylate is intercalated. When two methacrylate units are present on the cation of the clay, both systems are exfoliated. TGA data show that the thermal stability of all the nanocomposites is improved, as expected. The relationships between the fire properties and nanostructure of the nanocomposites are complicated, as shown by cone calorimetry. The conclusions that one may reach using cone calorimetry do not completely agree with those from XRD and TEM. The evaluation of mechanical properties shows an increase in Young's modulus for all nanocomposites along with a decrease in elongation; tensile strength is decreased for methacrylate nanocomposites but increased for styrenics systems.
