An algebraic variational multiscale–multigrid method is proposed for large-eddy simulation of turbulent variable-density flow at low Mach number. Scale-separating operators generated by level-transfer operators from plain aggregation algebraic multigrid methods enable the application of modeling terms to selected scale groups (here, the smaller of the resolved scales) in a purely algebraic way. Thus, for scale separation, no additional discretization besides the basic one is required, in contrast to earlier approaches based on geometric multigrid methods. The proposed method is thoroughly validated via three numerical test cases of increasing complexity: a Rayleigh–Taylor instability, turbulent channel flow with a heated and a cooled wall, and turbulent flow past a backward-facing step with heating. Results obtained with the algebraic variational multiscale–multigrid method are compared to results obtained with residual-based variational multiscale methods as well as reference results from direct numerical simulation, experiments and LES published elsewhere. Particularly, mean and various second-order velocity and temperature results obtained for turbulent channel flow with a heated and a cooled wall indicate the higher prediction quality achievable when adding a small-scale subgrid-viscosity term within the algebraic multigrid framework instead of residual-based terms accounting for the subgrid-scale part of the non-linear convective term.  相似文献

The flow past an interface piercing circular cylinder at the Reynolds number Re=2.7×104 and the Froude numbers Fr=0.2 and 0.8 is investigated using large-eddy simulation. A Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model and a level set based sharp interface method are used for the spatially filtered turbulence closure and the air-water interface treatment, respectively. The mean interface elevation and the rms of interface fluctuations from the simulation are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. The organized periodic vortex shedding observed in the deep flow is attenuated and replaced by small-scale vortices at the interface. The streamwise vorticity and the outward transverse velocity generated near the edge of the separated region, which enforces the separated shear layers to deviate from each other and restrains their interaction, are primarily responsible for the devitalization of the periodic vortex shedding at the interface. The lateral gradient of the difference between the vertical and transverse Reynolds normal stresses, increasing with the Froude number, is the main source of the streamwise vorticity and the outward transverse velocity at the interface.  相似文献

The velocity-scalar filtered joint density function (FJDF) used in large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent combustion is experimentally studied. Measurements are made in the fully developed region of an axisymmetric turbulent jet using an array consisting of three X-wires and resistance-wire temperature sensors. Filtering in the cross-stream and streamwise directions is realized by using the array and by invoking Taylor’s hypothesis, respectively. The means of the FJDF conditional on the subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulent kinetic energy and the SGS scalar variance at a given location range from close to joint normal to bimodal with the peaks separated in both velocity and scalar spaces, which correspond to qualitatively different mixing regimes. For close to joint normal FJDFs, the SGS fields are well mixed. For bimodal FJDFs, the conditionally filtered scalar diffusion and dissipation strongly depend on the SGS velocity and scalar, consistent with a combination of diffusion layers and plane strain in the SGS fields, which is similar to the counter-flow model for laminar flamelets. The results suggest that in LES, both mixing regimes could potentially be modeled accurately. The velocity field affects the SGS variance and the filtered scalar dissipation rate primarily by changing the degree of nonequilibrium of the SGS scalar and the SGS time scale, respectively. This study further demonstrates the importance of including velocity in mixing models.  相似文献

The wavelet-based multiresolution analysis (MRA) technique is used to develop a modelling approach to large-eddy simulation (LES) and its associated subgrid closure problem. The LES equations are derived by projecting the Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations onto a hierarchy of wavelet spaces. A numerical framework is then developed for the solution of the large and the small-scale equations. This is done in one dimension, for the Burgers equation, and in three dimensions, for the N–S problem. The proposed methodology is assessed in a priori tests on an atmospheric turbulent time series and on data from direct numerical simulation. A posteriori (dynamic) tests are also carried out for decaying and force-driven Burgers turbulence.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a cost-effective approach allowing one to evaluate the acoustic field generated by a turbulent jet. A turbulence-resolving simulation of an incompressible turbulent round jet is performed for a Reynolds number equal to 460,000 thanks to the massively parallel high-order flow solver Incompact3d. Then a formulation of Lighthill's solution is derived, using an azimuthal Fourier series expansion and a compactness assumption in the radial direction. The formulation then reduces to a line source theory, which is cost-effective to implement and evaluate. The accuracy of the radial compactness assumption, however, depends on the Strouhal number, the Mach number, the observation elevation angle, and the radial extent of the source. Preliminary results are showing that the proposed method approaches the experimental overall sound pressure level by less than 4 dB for aft emission angles below 50°.  相似文献

Serrated jet nozzles are considered to be an efficient and practical passive control approach for jet noise. However, some fundamental mechanisms of serration effects on jet noise are not fully understood, especially in terms of the sound source. In this paper, a high-fidelity simulation framework using large-eddy simulation (LES) is demonstrated to predict near-field turbulence and far-field acoustics from an ultra-high-bypass-ratio engine with round and serrated nozzles. Far-field sound is predicted using Ffowcs Willams–Hawkings (FWH) integration. The results show that the serrated nozzle increases mixing near the nozzle and hence the turbulence decay rate, reducing the turbulence level downstream. The serrations shift the energy from the low frequencies to the high frequencies and decrease overall sound pressure levels by about 3 dB over the low-frequency range. Sound sources are analysed based on fourth-order space–time correlations. There are six major source components (R1111, R2222, R3333, R1313, R1212, and R2323) inside the jet shear layers. The serrations are able to reduce the amplitude of these source terms, causing them to decay rapidly to a level below the round nozzle jet within 2D downstream of the nozzle.  相似文献

The structure and dynamics of a turbulent partially premixed methane/air flame in a conical burner were investigated using laser diagnostics and large-eddy simulations (LES). The flame structure inside the cone was characterized in detail using LES based on a two-scalar flamelet model, with the mixture fraction for the mixing field and level-set G-function for the partially premixed flame front propagation. In addition, planar laser induced florescence (PLIF) of CH and chemiluminescence imaging with high speed video were performed through a glass cone. CH and CH2O PLIF were also used to examine the flame structures above the cone. It is shown that in the entire flame the CH layer remains very thin, whereas the CH2O layer is rather thick. The flame is stabilized inside the cone a short distance above the nozzle. The stabilization of the flame can be simulated by the triple-flame model but not the flamelet-quenching model. The results show that flame stabilization in the cone is a result of premixed flame front propagation and flow reversal near the wall of the cone which is deemed to be dependent on the cone angle. Flamelet based LES is shown to capture the measured CH structures whereas the predicted CH2O structure is somewhat thinner than the experiments.  相似文献

In the present paper, an implicit time accurate approach combined with multigrid, preconditioning and residual smoothing is used for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of low Mach number flow. In general, due to the restriction imposed on the time step by the physics of the flow, the advantage of an implicit method over an explicit one for LES is not obvious. It is shown that for the test cases considered in this paper, the present approach allows an efficiency gain of a factor 4–7 compared to the use of a purely explicit approach. The efficiency varies according to the test case, grid clustering, physical time step and requested residual drop. Numerical difficulties are catalogued and mitigatory procedures are introduced. Several problems with available experimental and DNS data are employed to verify the efficiency of the method.  相似文献

The flows past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 3900 are simulated using large-eddy simulation(LES) and the far-field sound is calculated from the LES results. A low dissipation energy-conserving finite volume scheme is used to discretize the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The dynamic global coefficient version of the Vreman's subgrid scale(SGS) model is used to compute the sub-grid stresses. Curle's integral of Lighthill's acoustic analogy is used to extract the sound radiated from the cylinder. The profiles of mean velocity and turbulent fluctuations obtained are consistent with the previous experimental and computational results. The sound radiation at far field exhibits the characteristic of a dipole and directivity. The sound spectra display the-5/3 power law. It is shown that Vreman's SGS model in company with dynamic procedure is suitable for LES of turbulence generated noise.  相似文献
