Ferroelectric polarization can be switched by an external applied electric field and may also be reversed by a mechanical force via flexoelectricity from the strain gradient.In this study,we report the mechanical writing of an epitaxial BiFeO3(BFO)thin film and the combined action of an applied mechanical force and electric field on domain switching,where the mechanical force and electric field are applied using the tip of atomic force microscopy.When the applied force exceeds the threshold value,the upward polarization of the BFO thin film can be reversed by pure mechanical force via flexoelectricity;when an electric field is simultaneously applied,the mechanical force can reduce the coercive electric field because both the piezoelectricity from the homogeneous strain and the flexoelectricity from strain gradient contribute to the internal electric field in the film.The mechanically switched domains exhibit a slightly lower surface potential when compared with that exhibited by the electrically switched domains due to no charge injection in the mechanical method.Furthermore,both the mechanically and electrically switched domains exhibit a tunneling electroresistance in the BFO ferroelectric tunnel junction.  相似文献

We present a 3-dimensional, linear analysis of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) roll instability in a nematic liquid crystal under DC excitation. It is shown that the flexoelectric effect leads to a new symmetry of the flow pattern, viz. ahelical flow inoblique rolls. Our experimental observations agree with the theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Alkaline-earth-metal dihexadecyl phosphate salts were synthesized, and their thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Their thermotropic liquid crystal behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, dilatometry, and X-ray diffraction. On heating, the calcium, strontium, and barium salts exhibit columnar liquid crystal phases, whereas the less ionic beryllium and magnesium salts melt directly into isotropic liquids.  相似文献

In the last decade, it has been experimentally found that in certain conditions a periodic domain pattern arises in ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLC) in bookshelf geometry. Such a periodic texture appears after switching-off an external electric field, even in strong anchoring conditions. It has a static character and is bidimensional, being dependent on directions normal to both the smectic planes and the cell plates. Here a new model explaining this phenomenon is proposed, valid in the case of FLC with strong anchoring. The model is based on the coupling between the spontaneous polarization field in the first semi-period of its modulation along the cell plates and the same field in the second semi-period. This coupling competes with the FLC medium elasticity and is trapped by the anchoring. According to our model, in the ferroelectric state the biperiodic texture is favored by increasing the values of spontaneous polarization. The critical value of the spontaneous polarization for which the undeformed state becomes unstable is found. It is shown to be proportional to the square root of the ratio between the FLC elastic constant and the cell thickness. Moreover, it is inversely proportional to the sinus of the pre-tilt angle with respect to the cell walls.  相似文献

The dc electric field-induced deformations of conducting flexoelectric nematic layers were studied numerically. Asymmetric boundary conditions expressed by different anchoring strengths on the limiting surfaces were assumed. Nematic material was characterised by negative dielectric anisotropy. Both signs of the sum of flexoelectric coefficients were taken into account. The electric properties of the layer were described in terms of a weak electrolyte model. Mobility of cations was assumed to be one order of magnitude lower than that of anions. Quasi-blocking electrode contacts were assumed. The threshold voltages for the deformations and the director distributions in the deformed layers were calculated for low, moderate and high ion concentrations. The director distributions were also determined. The results show that asymmetry caused by difference between the anchoring strengths and by difference between mobilities of anions and cations lead to two threshold values for a given layer corresponding to two polarities of the bias voltage. Additionally, the values of both thresholds depend on the sign of the flexoelectric parameter. In every case under consideration, the threshold is significantly lowered when the ion concentration is high.  相似文献

The flexoelectric microcantilever offers an alternative approach for the development of micro/nano‐sensors. The transverse flexoelectric coefficients µ12 of barium strontium titanate microcantilevers were measured at room temperature, and found to keep the same value of 8.5 µC/m for microcantilevers with thickness ranging from 30 µm to 1.4 mm. The calculated effective piezoelectric coefficient and electrical energy density of flexoelectric cantilevers are superior to those of their piezoelectric counterparts, suggesting that the flexoelectricity‐induced polarization can be significantly increased as structures are scaled down due to the scaling effect of strain gradient, holding promise for flexoelectric micro/nano cantilever sensing applications. The first study of the flexo-ionic effect, i.e., mechanical deformation-induced electric signal, of the recently discovered ionic liquid crystal elastomers (iLCEs) is reported. The measured flexo-ionic coefficients were found to strongly depend on the director alignment of the iLCE films and can be over 200 µC/m. This value is orders of magnitude higher than the flexo-electric coefficient found in insulating liquid crystals and is comparable to the well-developed ionic polymers (iEAPs). The shortest response times, i.e., the largest bandwidth of the flexo-ionic responses, is achieved in planar alignment, when the director is uniformly parallel to the substrates. These results render high potential for iLCE-based devices for applications in sensors and wearable micropower generators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The paper reviews assignment of the low-temperature nematic phase observed in simple bimesogenic or dimeric systems based on cyanobiphenyls and difluoroterphenyls to the twist-bend nematic phase, NTB, using a range of experimental techniques. These include DSC, X-rays, Polarising Microscopy, electro-optics, birefringence and measurements of the electroclinic effect arising from flexoelectricity. An emphasis is laid on the observations of the chiral domains of opposite handedness at zero field in an otherwise achiral liquid crystalline system in this phase. These observations are a direct consequence of the structure of the twist-bend phase predicted by Ivan Dozov for achiral bent core molecules. The paper reviews the electro-optic phenomena and the observed electroclinic effect and how these observations assign it as the NTB phase. Results of the nanoscale helical pitch measurements using freeze-fracture microscopy are reviewed and discussed briefly. Results of the measurements of elastic constants especially close to the N–NTB transition are also reviewed.  相似文献

A detailed theoretical analysis of determining the sum of flexoelectric coefficients in nematic liquid crystals using the capacitance method is given. In the strong anchoring parallel aligned nematic (PAN) and hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cells, the dependences of the capacitance on the sum of flexoelectric coefficients and the applied voltage are obtained by numerical simulations, and the distributions of the director and the electric potential for different applied voltages and flexoelectric coefficients are also given. Based on this theoretical analysis, we propose an experimental design for measuring the capacitance of a liquid crystal cell using the improved precision LCR meter E4980A (Agilent). Through comparing the experimental data with the simulated results, the sum of flexoeletric coefficients can be determined.  相似文献

Over the past decade, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) – small and portable devices designed to harvest electricity from mechanical vibrations and friction – have matured from a niche theme of electrical engineering research into multidisciplinary research encompassing materials science, physics, and chemistry. Recent advances in both the fundamental understanding and performances of TENGs have been made possible by surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and theoretical chemistry research entering this active and promising field. This short review focuses on the recent developments of direct-current (DC) TENGs, where sliding friction or repetitive contact–separation cycles between the surface of polymers, metals, chemically modified semiconductors, and more recently even by the simple contact of surfaces with water solutions, can output DC suitable to power electronic devices without the need of additional rectification. We critically analyze the role of surface chemistry toward maximizing DC TENG outputs and device longevity. The major current hypotheses about their working mechanism(s) are also discussed.  相似文献
