Unusual Nortriterpenoid Saponins from Stauntonia chinensis

Four new saponins, yemuosides YM₁₇–YM₂₀ ( 1 – 4 , resp.), were isolated from the rattan of Stauntonia chinensis DC. (Lardizabalaceae) along with a known saponin, nipponoside D ( 5 ). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and chemical evidence as 20,30‐dihydroxy‐29‐noroleanolic acid 28‐O‐α‐L ‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl ester ( 1 ), 20,29‐dihydroxy‐30‐noroleanolic acid 28‐O‐α‐L ‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl ester ( 2 ), 29‐hydroxy‐30‐norolean‐20(21)‐enolic acid 28‐O‐α‐L ‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl ester ( 3 ), 29‐hydroxyoleanolic acid 28‐O‐α‐L ‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl ester ( 4 ), and 23,29‐dihydroxyoleanolic acid 28‐O‐α‐L ‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐D ‐glucopyranosyl ester ( 5 ). Yemuoside YM₁₇–YM₁₉ ( 1 – 3 , resp.) contain novel unusual nortriterpene aglycones.     

Simultaneous determination of YM928, a novel noncompetitive AMPA receptor antagonist, and its demethylated metabolite in rat, dog and monkey plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection

A specific HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of YM928, a novel noncompetitive AMPA receptor antagonist, and its demethylated metabolite (YM-58875) in rat, dog and monkey plasma was developed and validated. The method utilized multiple-step liquid-liquid extraction followed by a reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection at 275 nm. No interfering peaks were observed at the retention times of YM928, YM-58875 or internal standard. The validated quantitation range was 5-5000 ng/mL for both YM928 and YM-58875 when 1 mL of the plasma sample was used. The intra- and inter-day precision was less than 5.3 and 2.5% for YM928, and 3.7 and 2.3% for YM-58875, respectively. The intra- and inter-day accuracies were -8.7-5.3% and 0.7-1.9% for YM928, and -10.0-6.1% and 1.3-3.4% for YM-58875, respectively. The mean recoveries in the extraction process were 52.7-62.8%. The utility of this analytical method was demonstrated by the investigation of the pharmacokinetics of the unchanged drug and its metabolite in preclinical studies.     

Remarks on convex cones

We point out in this note that the class of cones in a locally convex topological vector space satisfying property () or piecewise relatively weakly compact cones is exactly the class of cones admitting weakly compact bases or the class of cones whose closures admit weakly compact bases.This work was supported by a Monash University Postdoctoral Fellowship.     

Femtosecond vibrational nuclear dynamics in the electronically excited state of the I2 molecule

Dynamics of the nuclear motion in the bound electronic B-state of the I₂ molecule was studied in the real time scale. Experiments were performed by the femtosecond pump-probe technique, which measured the dependence of the intensity of fluorescenceP(t) in the highly excited f-state on the time delay between pump and probe pulses. TheP(t) dependence observed has an oscillating character with a period of –300 fs. The pump pulse was generated by a femtosecond dye laser and amplified in a pulse dye laser amplifier; its spectral width was 5.6 nm, the wavelength in the center of the spectrum was 614 nm, and the duration was 90 fs. The probe pulse was generated in a KDP crystal due to duplication of the light frequency; its spectral width was 1.2 nm, the wavelength in the center of the spectrum was 307 nm, and the duration was 120 fs. TheP(t) dependence on the parameters of the probe and pump pulses was theoretically analyzed in terms of the quantum model based on the known energies of electronic vibrational-rotational states in the X-, B-, and f-terms of the iodine molecule. Experimental and calculatedP(t) plots at time delays of up to l.5 ps and time resolution of less than 100 fs were compared. Values of potentials in the X-, B-, and f-terms of the iodine molecule, spectra, and durations of pump and probe pulses are sufficient data for quantitative calculation of the experimentally obtainedP(t) plot.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Note on the m-step competition numbers of paths and cycles

Since Cohen introduced the competition graph in 1968, the competition graph has been studied widely and many variations of it have been discussed. In 2000, Cho, Kim and Nam defined and studied the m-step competition graph and computed the 2-step competition numbers of paths and cycles. Recently, Ho gave bounds for the m-step competition numbers of paths and cycles. In this paper we continue to study the m-step competition numbers of paths and cycles, partially improve the results of Ho on the upper bounds of the m-step competition numbers of paths and cycles, and show that a conjecture posed by Ho is not true.     

The Medvedev lattice of computably closed sets

Simpson introduced the lattice of Π⁰₁ classes under Medvedev reducibility. Questions regarding completeness in are related to questions about measure and randomness. We present a solution to a question of Simpson about Medvedev degrees of Π⁰₁ classes of positive measure that was independently solved by Simpson and Slaman. We then proceed to discuss connections to constructive logic. In particular we show that the dual of does not allow an implication operator (i.e. that is not a Heyting algebra). We also discuss properties of the class of PA-complete sets that are relevant in this context. Supported by the Austrian Research Fund (Lise Meitner grant M699-N05).

Converging upper and lower bounds for ground-state energies of atomic nuclei

The production of K⁺-mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.3 GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon (NN NYK⁺) and two-step -nucleon (N K⁺YN) or pion-nucleon (N K⁺Y) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel (CBUU) transport approach including the kaon final-state-interactions (FSI). Momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are included as well as K⁺ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental K⁺ spectra taken at COSY-Jülich. Our systematic analysis of K⁺ spectra from ¹²C, ⁶³Cu, ¹⁰⁷Ag and ¹⁹⁷Au targets as well as their momentum differential ratios gives a repulsive K⁺ potential of 20±5 MeV at normal nuclear matter density.     

Property ∏σ and tensor products of operator algebras

In this paper, we introduce Property ∏σ of operator algebras and prove that nest subalgebras and the finite-width CSL subalgebras of arbitrary von Neumann algebras have Property ∏σ.Finally, we show that the tensor product formula alg ML1-(×)algNL2 = algM-(×)N(L1 (×) L2) holds for any two finite-width CSLs L1 and L2 in arbitrary von Neumann algebras M and N, respectively.     

Compatible maps and invariant approximations

The existence of invariant best approximations for compatible maps is proved. Our results unify, and generalize various known results to a more general class of noncommuting mappings.
