Expedient Diels-Alder assembly of 4-aryl-4-phenylsulfonyl cyclohexanones

The efficient preparation of 4-aryl-4-phenylsulfonyl cyclohexanones, containing a quaternary sulfone-bearing carbon centre, is described. Their synthesis proceeds in 38-78% overall yield by way of three steps: (i) sulfinate alkylation; (ii) methylenation; and (iii) regioselective Diels-Alder condensation with 2-trimethylsiloxybutadiene. The scope and limitations of the one-pot Mannich-type methylenation described were examined.     

Oxygen activation on metallic centers and oxidizing abilities of such oxygen

It was shown that metallcontaining peroxides such as XOOOBu-t [X = (t-BuO)₂Al, (t-BuO)₃Ti] generate molecular oxygen in the electron-excited singlet state (¹O₂). These ozonides and η²-peroxocomplex Ph₃Bi(η²O₂) demonstrate high oxidative activity towards some classes of organic substances under mild conditions (20 °C).     

Nucleophilic epoxidation of γ-alkoxy dienyl sulfoxide derivatives

(E,E) and (Z,E) γ-alkoxy dienyl sulfones undergo nucleophilic epoxidation with remarkable regio- and stereoselectivity to render syn oxiranes in a process mainly controlled by the alkoxy stereocenter. Upon epoxidation γ-hydroxy dienyl sulfoxides provide sulfinyl and sulfonyl oxiranes along with bis-epoxides formed through a Payne rearrangement that can be prevented by silylation of the OH group. Interestingly, the presence of a γ-silyloxy group can invert the stereochemical trend of the molecule affording mainly an anti epoxidation process.     

New access to 1,3-diketones from aldehydes

A simple and efficient methodology to introduce an 1,3-diketone motif from various aldehyde precursors in three steps with good overall yields is described using β-ketosulphone 7 as masked equivalent of acetone.     

TiCl4-promoted addition of nucleophiles to open chain α-amidoalkylphenyl sulfones

Linear α-amidoalkylphenyl sulfones are converted into the corresponding N-acyliminium ions by treatment with TiCl₄ at low temperature and then made to react with different nucleophiles such as allyltrimethylsilane, silyl ketene acetal, anisole and thiophene.     

Cathodic reduction of SO2 in the presence of organic dihalides

The reaction of the electrolytically generated SO ₂ ^– anion radical with 1,-dihalides is used for the synthesis of sulfur containing heterocycles like oxathiolane-, oxathiane-, thiane- and thiepane-oxides. 1,2-Dihalides are reductively deblocked to give olefines.

Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion des elektrolytisch erzeugten SO ₂ ^– -Anionradikals mit 1,-Dihalogeniden führt zu schwefelhaltigen Heterocyclen wie Oxathiolan-, Oxathian-, Thian- und Thiepanoxiden. 1,2-Dihalogenide geben durch reduktive Eliminierung Olefine.

     

Sulfonylation from sodium dithionite or thiourea dioxide

The cheap and easily available sodium dithionite and thiourea dioxide have been used as the source of sulfonyl group in the synthesis of sulfones and sulfonamides recently.Compared with other methods for the sulfonylation reactions,the strategies using sodium dithionite or thiourea dioxide provide an alternative and complementary route to diverse sulfonyl compounds.During the reaction process,sulfur dioxide anion radical is the key intermediate,which is usually generated from a single electron transfer under suitable conditions.The advantages using sodium dithionite or thiourea dioxide in the sulfonylation reactions include mild conditions and broad substrate scope with excellent functional group compatibility.Further applications by using sodium dithionite and thiourea dioxide in organic transformations will be anticipated.     

Oxidation of aromatic sulfides with molecular oxygen: Controllable synthesis of sulfoxides or sulfones

The recent development of selective oxidation of aromatic sulfides with molecular oxygen was highlighted. The sulfoxides and sulfones could be obtained by simply switching the reaction media, i.e., bis(2-butoxyethyl)ether (BBE) or poly(ethylene glycol)dimethyl ether (PEGDME). The application of the high-boiling-point polyether as an initiator and green media can eliminate the need of large quantities of additives and volatile solvents. This strategy represents an economic and eco-friendly method that could find potential applications.     

Rhodium catalyzed hydroformylation of 2-phenylsulfonylbicyclo[2.2.1] alkenes: effect of the phenylsulfonyl group

The preliminary results of the hydroformylation of 2-phenylsulfonyl substituted norbornene and norbornadiene derivatives catalyzed by the unmodified Rh(CO)₂acac system are presented. The reaction, occurring under standard oxo conditions, gives polyfunctionalized exo norbornene- and exo norbornanecarboxaldehydes. The effect of the phenylsulfonyl group has been evaluated: it has been found that the steric properties of the sulfonyl substituent, more than the electronic ones, influence the regioselectivity of the process.     

Thiol derivatives of arylnaphthylmethane as novel anti-osteoporotic agents

(Mercaptophenyl)naphthylmethane derivatives were synthesized as novel estrogen receptor binding ligands. [4-(Methylsulfonyl)phenyl](naphth-1-yl)ketone shows a very promising activity towards osteoporosis.
