OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a translated version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) as a diagnostic tool for people with and without a laryngeal pathology, among Hebrew speakers. STUDY DESIGN: Parallel group design. METHODS: The VHI was translated and adapted to Hebrew. The translated version was, then, administered to a group of 182 patients with various laryngeal pathologies and a control group of 171 people with no laryngeal pathology. Based on the participants' responses to the VHI, statistical analyses were, initially, performed to assess validity and reliability, and then to evaluate group differences between the pathological and control groups and among the different pathological groups included in the study. RESULTS: Statistical analyses showed high reliability values of the Hebrew version of the VHI (overall Cronbach's alpha r = 0.976). Participants' scores were not affected by their age (P = 0.156) or gender (P = 0.261). The participants in the control group obtained significantly lower scores on the overall VHI score, as well as on all three subscale scores, in comparison with the pathological group (P < 0.001). In addition, within the pathological group, patients with neurogenic pathologies received higher scores than all other pathological groups, whereas patients with laryngeal inflammation received lower scores than all other pathological groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The VHI is a powerful tool for quantifying patients' perceptions of their voice handicaps, and it maintained its power across translation. An initial attempt has been made to understand factors that determine acoustic comfort for cruise ship passengers. Although no literature directly pertinent to the question could be found, use of elements from studies on railways coaches in a questionnaire administered to shipbuilder and sub-contractor professionals on board during sea trials was judged a relevant initial approach. The questionnaire, consisting of closed questions followed by open questions, was drawn up to assess acoustic comfort in relation to others factors (such as temperature or light) and to identify the main conditions causing acoustic discomfort. During two sea trials 100 questionnaires were completed. Acoustics, then temperature, are pointed out as the first two comfort criteria and the priorities for improvement. Creaking and squeaking noises, noise of engines and whistles from HVAC are the main reported causes of annoyance. The results of the investigation demonstrate the prominent role of acoustics in respect of ship-board comfort. 相似文献

In the present study, the effects of different noise combinations on sleep were assessed in two contexts, with a single noise source and with combined noise sources. Road traffic noise, and construction or movie noise combined with road traffic noise were used as the single noise source and the combined noise sources, respectively. When the sound pressure level of road traffic noise was kept constant, levels of the construction and movie noise were changed. Twenty participants were followed for approximately 2 weeks, during which their sleep was evaluated using a questionnaire, including questions on sleeping behavior, premature awakening, and subjective responses. The results showed that the combined noise sources including construction noise decreased the number of participants who fell asleep within an hour and increased the number that were awakened prematurely compared to the effects of road traffic noise combined with movie noise. However, similar tendencies were observed while evaluating sleep quality, sleep disturbance, and annoyance. 相似文献

Questionnaire-based surveys are a standard method used for assessing the safety climate within an organization. However, their analysis – in particular data aggregation – poses several challenges, among which are subjective judgment, incompleteness and uncertainty. This paper explores the use of approaches based on belief structures for aggregating data from safety climate questionnaires. Data relevant to this study were collected through a questionnaire administered to the employees of a nuclear research centre. The results show that, while belief structures may offer a promising way to represent data collected from questionnaires, the existing aggregation methods are not always adequate. Averaging schemes applied to belief structures seem the most suited – among the methods investigated – in the specific problem context analyzed. The analysis of the survey data shows the limitations of quantitative approaches for safety culture assessment and the need to always complement these with in-depth qualitative analysis. 相似文献

全英文研究型教学是值得探索的旨在提高人才培养质量的教学形式,因此多年来我们针对材料化学专业的专业必修课有机材料化学开展了全英文研究型教学的尝试与实践。为了解学生的英语学习现状、需求及教学效果,设计了开课前问卷和结课调查问卷。调查结果表明,学生有较好的英语水平,有学习用全英文讲授的专业课的内在动力和需求,对该课程的教材选择、英语讲授、教学内容及安排、教学方法和形式等方面的满意程度很高,全英文研究型教学不仅可行,而且可以取得很好的教学效果。 相似文献
